So the DMV is giving me fits. Searched past threads and called some of the suggested places to no avail. Seems like most of the suggestions were for guys with title.

Heres the short & (not so) sweet rundown:

-Bought the body in Kentucky (no title...just bill of sale)
-Built the car including the frame (no original frame)
-Got some yellow plates (correct year, numbers are clear)
-Took a made up VIN down to the DMV to make sure it was clear, got the go ahead with the number
-Came home, stamped the VIN into the frame behind the steering box.
-Went back to DMV with the car to get the verification...dude said he couldnt verify it and that I would have to get a peace officer to do the verification.
-Contacted a hot rodder pal who is also a Riverside County Sheriff Deputy...he filled out the paperwork.
-Took that to DMV, got the shaft...they said it HAS to be a CHP officer

That's where I stand now. Im worried that the CHP will tell me to fuck off (loud-ass pipes, 8 inch windshield view, no exterior door handles, etc...)

Worried about what the shit to do if they deny me. Hoping that someone out there knows a CHP hot rodder (or just a cool CHP guy) who can get this shit straightened out for me. Or some other way...

    What do I gotta do!?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

By the way, been a while since I posted any shots of progress. Here she is in her new color. Before you ask...yes, I love baby shit green.

Go to a different DMV office. I had my last 3 VIN's verified by the local PD.

"Vehicle Verification Form (REG. 31) completed by a California DMV employee, California licensed vehicle verifier, or a regularly employed peace officer."

It's worth a try. I went from one window to the next at the DMV and got a totally different answer about registering one of mine.

don't know about cali, but the officer here in texas doesn't inspect it for running condition, he just verifies the vin. you can even bring it in non-running. it's not like a vehicle inspection.

CHP is not restricted to the VIN check. It is "officer discretion". Get a pissy one and you can get a VIN check, and a "fix-it" ticket, which, incidentally, can be signed off by local PD, as well. All of mine have!

Unfortunately, my local PD buddy recently got laid off. :(

:D DMV sent me to CHP because they could not find any numbers, went down and the officer just took the number off the frame and said OK.

done deal, but if you are worried about the pipes, put your ride on a trailor and take the pipes off, it dosent have to be a driver for vin verification.

My only advice is to avoid CHP at all costs. As far as i know there are assigned vin officers now at each county CHP and they are a FUCKING pain in the ass..

  10. Afirmative! Different DMV. Any peace officer can do it.

Schedule your VIN appt. Throw it on a trailer with misc parts removed (steering wheel, tail lights, headers, etc) and take it down. He is only going to do a VIN inspection on a work in progress, not a vehicle/light inspection, nor will he issue a correctable citation. (correctables can only be issued to a vehicle on the roadway)
And for the love of God, dont give him the "skinny" on how you came about it. Obviously it was found in a field on a long lost relative's property somewhere.

Also, it is going to be Statewide policy very soon; if the DMV inspector does not recognize the VIN verification signature as that of his local CHP VIN officer, you will be refused

He already did, and the DMV drone turned him away. Nice how they make-up the code, freestyle at each window, at each office, throughout the state!

Just curious. How did you just make up a VIN number? Did you at least make it close to what they were from Ford, or was it completely random?

I just went through tis very thing with an A out of Nevada. Your car looks ligit, I'm sure you kept records. Park it in the driveway and ask the local CHP to come to your house to verify it. It doesn't have to run. They will come to your house if it doesn't run anyways so no big deal either way. Most CHP guys love cars and get them talking about all you've done to it. Better to trailer it there if you can because it's easier on them. The DMV is also not that hard if you have your ducks in a row. Fill out the forms before you get there, don't be impatient or a dick and they will help you immensely. Say something positive about the purple shirts they wear and support them. That's a God awful job and they rarely get to interact with positive folks so make their experience a good one and yours will be as well. The best suggestion for sure is to use another DMV first though.

I don't work for the DMV but I have had good luck with them and the CHP. Life's a game and play to win, with a smile on your face.

    Good Luck,

    Tim

  18. You are partly screwed.

If the DMV sends you to CHP, that is all you can do. Any peace officer could have done it BEFORE that point. Now you can ONLY go to CHP.
    Its in the system now.
They sent you there because the stamping you did looked wrong to the DMV guy.
Its almost the kiss of death for someone in your situation. Unless you don't care if they assign a VIN to it (blue tag)..

You can have some legal issues with a made up vin. You need to get your ducks in a row.
I suggest you get rid of what you stamped on there..change it, and go to a DMV service next time.

Throw all the paperwork you have now away and start over.

Go to another Dmv office. The Dmv person you spoke to does not know what the law states. Any peace officer can fill out the form. I just did one the other day and Im not a CHP ( cant handle police work) I do work for a Sheriffs Dept.

Not trying to rip off this thread, but I have a question about a point that I don't understand. What if your frame is home built, and never had a VIN#? I have a bill of sale on the cab, (and all receipts) but there are no numbers on the sheet metal either. I'm trying to get the push on for Jan 2. This thread is of vital interest to me!

  21. Not sure of the procedure, but the DMV can assign a VIN to the vehicle. Now that they have changed some laws, I'm not sure if it has to meet current model year standards, or be classified as special construction.

thats why guys either buy titles/ vin plates or make up a #.

  22. Not that I have done this or anything.... Just found the same year car, same make.....took the VIN and kept changing the last digit until it was clear. What, like 10billion produced? How many still registered? If the # comes back "not on file"=BINGO! I would'nt know about doing this,so don't ask.

You can ask 20 different people a question like that and you'll get 20 different answers. Probably be best to call DMV and pose the question as a hypothetical situation and see what they say. 1-916-657-6560

  24. What the fuck is a "Peace Officer"?

  25. You are correct up to the point that he went to DMV and had it referred to CHP. The DMV guy knew exactly what the law states and did as he was supposed to do.

If it was referred to CHP, he has to go to CHP. They are sending him there because there is a problem with the numbers. the DMV choony likes to see 2 vin's, if there was only one, he will send you to CHP. That's their only option. They wont usually just send you away to get it signed off by someone else.

  26. I'll agree on most of these post especially the one about "trailering in".
I had a '55 (in the project stage) that needed VIN verification, and the lady at the DMV from the window came out in the parking lot and did it (of course it had had a title, but it was off the books, thus verification was req'd to generate an updated version).

On my '39 (again in the "project" stage-I had pulled the blown engine and trans) I trailered it to the local CHP headquarters (called ahead, gave them my name and pretty much "created " an appt with them... politeness and "need to know" go a long way). It had no numbers whatsoever on the cowl or original frame.
The car was apparently used as a barter card amongst a number of body shops and things that were taken off never got put back on (that's what I was told... feel free to use my story if needed).
Long story short, they riveted a CHP CA number tag (like the big trucks have)to the drivers door post... signed the papers, and hello DMV and my title slip.
I waited about 3 weeks before I took in my year specific plates to have them verified and swicthed (DMV window clerks so do not handle multiple transactions well). Oh, and then they had to photo them and send a FAX (and triplicate signed forms) to Sacto for verification before they would send me my tags and authorization. I went thru that circus just about a year ago last month.

Good Luck... and think happy thoughts!

desertratrodder you are right about getting reffered to CHP.. The kiss of death.. I have an old panhead with State assigned numbers. The CHP wants to title it a 2009 spcn because there is no number on the frame. I told him i would park it and never touch it again before I let him do that.. this has nothing do do with this thread, im sure bikes are different.. the CHP is not your friend..

I was a little worried about it too, but I just took my chopper in the back of my pick-up to my local CHP office and the man came out, I showed him the VIN and he filled out and signed the paper. Those guys don't give a shit what the vehicle is they just want to get it done and go for donuts! I would definately trailer it though. What the fuck are they gonna do? They can't bust you if you're not driving it. Most cops, unless they are real car guys are not going to know what they're looking at.

pretty much any peace officer used to be able to verify vins.

i do quite a few and have been told lately, dmv, or chp, period.

personally, if its chp they want, take it down there. its already in the system. you might be surprised how easy it is
