Not so. In most states all taxes go into a general fund, then the legislature distributes it as they see fit.

WELL DUH! Did you ever hear of fuel tax? Just happens to be a use tax paid for by the gallon. Upwards of a third to half of the price at the pump if you add up all the various levels of government, and don't think that some/most/all states haven't been jacking up their portion of this lately too.

  4. I don't know how long its been like this because I don't buy many new cars but one of the scams in New Jersey is when you buy/lease a new car you have to buy a 4 year registration. If you got a 2 or 3 year lease I guess ya just get it snapped off in yer ass for the remaining couple years cost.

The new minimum license fee in Iowa since 1/1/09 is $50 but if you owned (and had it licensed) before 1/1/09 it should have stayed at the old rate (for as long as you own it). There were some other changes such as antique plates but if your 53 was licensed to you before that date you need to go back and get a refund.

  6. Wis-i think we're up to $78 for passenger car, but collector plates or hobbyist plates are a one shot deal, with no annual renewal fee.

Our Governor tried last year but failed but you can bet it will be back this session. Idaho roads and bridges are in pretty bad shape and they are trying everything to do a catch-up now.

Our governor, who is the champion of the little guy, raised everything last year. cars are now $75.00 (I think) ...title fee is way up... the license on my Peterbilt went from $1900.00 to $2500.00.

Federal gas tax monies go to the Highway Fund which is being raided to fund social programs. I believe Wisconsin is supposed to dedicate the gas tax monies to road improvements.

Despite better fuel economy we were still using more gasoline every year (until the recession hit)... I know I'm using less since there's a lot less freight to haul... I haven't turned a wheel since September.

vehicle registration is probably the cheapest part of driving old cars. i ain't gonna complain about it costing me $50 a pop to register my old cars. what the gov't does with that money is beyond the scope of the hamb.

We voted in a base 30.00 license fee a few years ago but most of my rigs end up costing about 50 or so to tag. Little add on fees but no where near as bad as it was fifteen years ago when we had to pay an annual excise tax that often ran into the hundreds on newer cars. One change is that we don't see nearly as many cars in Washington with Oregon plates anymore. Yom plates and Collector plates are a one time deal here if you want to run them but there are some catches involved.

I am tired of giving it away. It is time someone else stepped up to the plate and started helping out. I don't believe that the U.S. is the richest per capita anymore. As far as fees, well just another name for taxes. JMO

Well with that analogy that makes sense. So I guess people with a lot of kids should pay the school taxes seeing they use the school system a lot more than a family with no kids.

  17. NY charges you based on the weight, plus they bang you $50 for a new title, $25 for new plates, I registered a '99 GMC van last month and it cost close to $200 before I left. You also have to pay for two years, and if you turn plates in sooner you get a credit I guess - no refunds. Several counties add their own use charge of $5 up to like 5000 lbs and $10 over that, they want to do that here now.

My '50 Chevy was about $70 and I transferred plates to it, no titles on 72-back.

Most politicians are too stupid to understand that if you make things cost more, people are less likely to do them, so raising a fee or a tax to try to gain revenue is much more likely to result in LESS revenue. Titles here used to be $10 for a new one, then it jumped to $50 in one shot. Result: I rarely put a title car into my name if I can avoid it, pretty much only if I'm going to drive it.

  18. exactly! i've been saying that for years , everyone should pay for the services they receive. i have no kids so i shouldn't have to pay for the schools

I LOVE Michigan! I paid a $35.00 one time fee many years ago to register my '47 plate on Big Olds.

Those are called "Year of Manufacturer" or YOM and are the best thing the States have come up with for keeping registration afforable for old cars.

Florida gave us the shaft this year.
Title fees: was 29, now 76
    registration 36, now 58
Renew license was 25, now 56

Unbelievable! My F250 went from 65 TO 101.

My complaint is that fees have slowly climbed over a long period of time. Now in one year they more than double. When you run the gubament like they do its no wonder the $$$ has to be extorted from other places to cover it.
