I am not talking about taking a bunch of pieces and making a T or A. I am talking about having a running ch***is and building a body from nothing to put onto it.

    Post up pictures also!!!!!

Literally thousands of cars have been built from scratch as you describe. Even to this day guys like Marcel in CA are building cars from scratch.
In the thirties, Frank Kurtis, Rusty Heinz, Coachcraft, still alive and building here on the HAMB. The Astra coupe from the fifties and recently restored.
So many I can't remember them all.

There are a lot of threads on this subject. Some of the cars are great, but many of the projects look like they were made out of pizza boxes. BAD. It takes some skill to get an even crown in the panels. I think crown is the right word.

Search 'Art Deco Roadster' here on the HAMB. You will find Kerry Pinkertons efforts to building a swoopy roadster body from aluminum flatsheet. It's an inspiration for all of us who'd like to do a scratch built body.

Hundreds if not thousands of them have been done over the years. It all depends on the skill level of the builder and the design talent of the designer (often the same person) to have it be a masterpiece or a pos.

Jim Hervatin scratch built a Model A pickup that was at Hunnert Car Pileup this fall. It followed the theme of a Weesner painting. There were pictures posted here on the HAMB as it was going together. Anyone have a link to that build? I saw it in person and talked to Jim at Hunnert, awesome truck, uber-talented builder.

What a excellent question. The first place to start is a picture. Get a idea of what you want to build. Then go from there. There are lots of ways of doing it. You can use 1/2 rod and use it to form your lines and then build your panels to it.(Like the ***us Bros.) You can make up the panels in cardboard and then use these as patterns for the metal. You can form a wooden buck in the shape you want and fabricate your panels to the buck. This is the most accurate, but the buck can take as long to build as the body.

But Start with some drawings, a picture, get a idea of were your heading and then go for it. The more you do, the more you'll do.

Here's a picture of mine. Started with 10 sheets of 19 gauge steel, some 1 5/8's tube and some 2X3 tube. There are ***orted old car pieces on the car, the grille is a '39 LaSalle (grille shell was handmade), the headlights are '37 Studebaker, and the taillights are '37 DeSoto. There was/is more to it than I originally thought there would be. Many things I never thought about or considered.

Not really looking for anything specific just something scratch built. It could look like a production car, could be a concept. Just looking to see what skills other have.

I personally do not have the skills to do anything like this myself, give me about 30 years and I might.
