Greeting from North Ga and Murrayville just south of Dawsonville home of moonshine and good county fried chicken.
I need to know what is the best ch***ic to use under my 1949 and 1952 Ford F1 p/u projects. The wb is on these vehicles is 118 w/ an over all 189. Plan to make one driver from the two trucks. Any help would be great.

Greetings Chicken Man! I'm Toby from about 90 miles south of you. I've been through Murrayville dozens of times. I have inlaws living halfway between Dawsonville and Dahlonega. Beautiful country!

Hi from a little ways south in Jefferson!

the swap meet is this weekend at Lanier National Speedway in Braselton (straight down Hwy. 53). Stop by and say hi--there's always a good group of HAMBers there.

Welcome to the board from Indiana.

  11. Welcome from Rockmart GA, Henrietta the '38 Ford pickup and Ozelle the '55 Ford send friendly horn honks.

The best ch***is to use under a '48-'52 F-1 is the one that came under it. It's a good simple ladder type frame that you can hang any kind of suspension or drivetrain on. If you want IFS with rack and pinion, look at the setup under an '80s Aerostar van, cheap and plentiful in the junkyards. Ch***is Engineering has everything you need to mount just about any engine/trans you want in the F-1 ch***is.

    Howdy from Dallas, GA.

I have a '52 F1 that has a front clip from a '78 Monte Carlo (Cutl***, Regal). I didn't do the conversion; it had already been done when I bought the truck. The truck drives pretty good however.

My only complaint is that it lowered the truck about 3 inches (I prefer stock ride height). I am currently researching ways to raise it back to closer to the stock ride height.

I've posted some photos here if anyone is interested.

    Peace,
    -DV

I would have to agree with 38fordpickup about sticking with the ch***is that came under the truck. I did quite a bit of research when I got my first F1. Certainly there are people who have set the F1 body on a later model ch***is, but it always turns out to be more work than they thought it was going to be. I have yet to see a truck that has an entirely new ch***is underneath that even a casual observer wouldn't notice immediately. The track width on an F1 is about 58 inches, and there aren't many donor vehicles with that width (not to mention wheelbase).

As others have mentioned above, there are many options for putting a (more) modern front suspension under your truck. One thing to keep in mind is that (again) the F1's are narrower than the F100's. May of the junk yard options do***ented for the F100 wouldn't work as well on an F1. Another problem that I'm encountering is that most of the good junk yard parts went to the crusher a couple of years ago when the price of steel got so high. I'm finding it dang hard to find parts in the junk yard for anything more than 10-15 years old.

If I were doing it from scratch, I'd probably just buy one of the MII IFS kits and be done with it. They're readily available and widely supported.

Just upgrade the original ch***is, there is nothing better. You can put Posie springs, disc brakes, new shocks, and improve the steering gear and you'll also improve the value as well. Henry kept that setup for years because there is nothing better! Check out the builds here on the Hamb and you'll get all the info you need, happy building and welcome.

Thanks folks for the advice, you are right. I have decided to stay with the stock frame, up grade the springs, brakes and steering box this winter. Then move on to the engine and trans later.

    Good morning folks,
My question for today is how to replace the 18 in split rims on my 49 Ford F 4 project? It currently has 700 x 18 tires and at some point in the future I would like to replace these tires and rims for a six or eight lug wheels. I finally found a parts house in Texas (Antique Auto 817 275 2381) for replacement brake and steering parts.
    Thanks for all the help.
