Model A with a Studebaker V8, have anyone here done it? Pics? I have searched several times here on the HAMB but have only found pics of one car. Thanks /Johan
I have a 30 coupe and I have started to collect parts to hotrod this little car I wanted to use either a flathead V8 or a 50"s V8 and last weekend I bought a stude 289 with 3sp OD. I have always liked those engines. So now I have to make a plan for this build and would like to see pics of model A:s with Stude V8:s And even better would be to get some info from someone who have done this! (or should I just get a SBC??) /Johan
stude v8 sounds like the way to go to me, especially since you have it. be prepared for a lot of WTF is that questions.
The Studebaker is a large engine. There's usually a reason you don't see any photos of Model A's with that engine. Yes it can be done, but you might be making more work for yourself and not be happy with the results. Measure everything, everyway possible before commiting to the swap.
I have '29 roadster on a '32 frame running a Stude V-8 and it really makes the car, not 1 person in a 100 can tell what the motor is, it will be worth the effort. The stude motor is expensive to buy parts for but, the 259s and 289s can be very strong runners, back in the early 60s I ran a coupe with a 289 and overdrive and it more than held its own in street racing. I'll email you some pics as soon can access my other computer.
Please look at my Stu T Baker. in my album. 289, 4brl automatic. The motor runs sweet. was setting in a car 4 about 7 yrs. got it started, never smoked, or banged or nothing. Sounded like a flat head, all you could hear was air sucking in the carb.. Got to love those stu t's. Put cowl steering in it. There's always a way... Besides, it's the only thing I ever inherited and I be DAMN if I wasn't going to use it.
One of the magazines this month or last month has a gold '32 roadster with a Stude featured. I forget if it's R&C or Hot Rod Deluxe, it's in the stack in the john.
I had the same 289, 3spd. od setup in a 39 Buick coupe back in 1963, it was tight even in the bigger car. The generator rubbed in inside of the hood when the engine torqued-up on take-offs, but I was a high school kid then so what the heck! The trans used a jeep top plate for a shifter also if that is any help. Good luck with your model A build, dare to be different!
There was a Rod and Custom article a year or two back that had a pair of A's with Stude V8's in em, I think it was a husband and wife...anyway, the photoshoot was done at Bonneville I believe...
Phastphil, I really want some pics of your car! Others, thanks for your answers, i wrote SBC to get your attention! I'll rather keep the 4banger than use a SBC. My biggest worry is exactly what some of you say, steering/starter issues. I don´t want cowlsteering, because I may put back the nice fenders some seasons to alter the look. And I want to avoid cross steering because if I do that I have to mount parallel bar So the best would be to use something similar to the original steering, but better. Any ideas?? 343W, Jeep top plate?!! From what models?? Sounds VERY interesting (I have a Hurst floor shifter but I may build this car with an old look and if I do that a Jeep shifter would be great!) Ruiner, I think you are talking about two 32s, one lightblue Tudor and a Roadster? /Johan
This is the only pic I have at work of my A with Stude 289 next to HotrodSurfer's truck in his driveway I used a Vega Cross steer and have no problems. Manual transmission with a Willwood hydraulic slave the down side is they are HEAVY The up side is everything else.
Damn, that's a nice looking '30. Beautiful color combo. Not that it matters, but I vote simple min. body mods., less is more, keeping the fenders and of course going with the Stude motor. Envious, would love to have that project.
Flt-Blk, Nice pickup! I definitely want more pictures of it. How much have you modified the firewall?? Stude trucks, Yep it´s a nice car, an older restoration that never got finished. But zero rust and perfect fenders!! That is a good start!! One more problem is to decide what rear axle I should use.. What do you use?? /Johan
here is mine 1931 coupe with a 53 studebaker 232 in it on 32 rails has some lionel speed parts on it and a 3 speed tranny....not finished yet but seems to be a rarity
Your A is the only one I have found before I started this tread, I'm glad you joined this tread! Is it a 41-48 rear end under your car or an earlier axle? I really want an older looking rearaxle like that, but I also want to drive my hotrod HARD!! I´m afraid it´s going to break often! I see you have cross steering, what steering box and shaft is that?? /Johan
hey CHEV55...sounds like a winner to me, besides your in SWEDEN. what the hell can anyone here do about it! HA! good luck with your build. your new friend in texas U.S.A. YEEHAAA! call me POP...or the old FART!

I'll have to pull some pictures out of my other hard drive. here is an artsy shot of Figiter's old 32 when I picked it up for him. I did the wheelbarrow trick on my firewall, the Turfmaster 2000 gave it's life so my distributor would clear. I run stock wheelbase so I had to pushed the radiator forward and put a "V" in the headlight bar to clear the grill. I run a mechanical fan.
