Kiwi Tinbender,I was at that Renwick meeting myself (with a bunch of other 'HOOOOONs') Miller only finished the Renault the night/early morning before that race in fact as 'Legend' would have it,I believe they 'ran it in 'comming over the hill from Nelson. That was a great weekend in my own experence, just a great time, with mates, that to this day remain friends, when you look back NZ was a great place to grow up...........the Kiwi might maybe flightless, but we get around,I'm in Melb/Australia and I see your resident in the land of the 'Maple Leaf'............good people the 'Kanooks' Would you remember there was a Massive car accident on the Saturday night involving a MK3 Zephyr and a Mini,(not sure about the Mini) I think this after dark activities put an end to the 'Renwicks' of the time..........regards427
Thats f##k## awsome, thanks for photo's and its great to see her under a good roof. I wish it was in my shed.
Actually, Thunder427,I live in Vancouver WASHINGTON....still get to sunny Nelson every 18 months or so...Steve..Great photo of the Renault...Wish I had all the old Photo News Magazines put out by the Nelson Evening Mail...that looks a bit like it could have come from there. Put me on the list for the book and PM me when it is available, if you would.....Thanx, Paul...
Before the Motorway, I used to go to the Auckland Freezing Works from Tauranga with Dad & we always stopped at the Jolly Farmer for refreshments A few years later going to rugby at Eden Park it was Red Fox & then Jolly Farmer. Memories of Bay Park was Red Dawson blowing his clutch/flywheel on the front straight, after the race we were on the track, I picked up a piece of flywheel...ouch it was still bloody hot. Loved Bay Park & those big V8's competing against minis & Escorts
Amazing the threads you find trawling the net! Got my license in '63 and never missed a meeting at Puke until '68. These photos sure bring back some memories...Neil Doyles Anglia virtually standing still with massive axle tramp as he tried to accelerate down the back straight, lap after lap.....Frank Radisich's HumJag - Humber 80 with a jag 3.8 shoehorned in and the gearlever almost in the back seat....Dave Walker and his Fiat 500 with an Anglia motor in the back seat....used to spin like a top at the stables hairpin.....Jack Nazers yellow Lotus Anglia fastback with the strange nose on it - like a flying saucer - wasn't it nicknamed "the UFO". Ted Thompsons Mini, with the twin cam Ford motor grafted to the Mini sump/gearbox. The craze for exhaust stacks through the bonnet when people started dropping V8s in all and sundry...the Morrari, the Zephyr Corvette, the Doyle Anglia, and I'm sure a couple of old 30's coupes that were still around in 64/65. Watching in amazement as Dave Simpson came out of nowhere and ran away and hid from the field, when he first got his Twin Cam Anglia sorted........ I must have a root through the old photo box and see what I can find!
More on the Custaxie which will be racing again in NZ in Jan 2010. Here's an article from the excellent Classic Driver magazine edited by the incomparable Allan Dick. An excellent read as is NZ Today it's sister magazine which covers more byways, road trips and the like around NZ. http://www.nzfmr.co.nz/pub//The Custaxie Rides Again.pdf

I was "searching" for any postings regarding Hillman Imps in the hopes that some commentary regarding Special/Super Saloon car racing would surface. What a surprise to find an extract of saloon car racing that I never knew existed.
This was a successful little Imp in the early 70s driven by Jim Richards. Now fully restored in period dress. It runs and sounds as good as it looks.
More restored and replicated NZ Allcomers and one post all comers.Hampton Downs January 2010. Replica Custaxie. Original Sprague Zodiac and replica Zephyr Corvette. A40s Post All-comer, the PDL Mustang II
"Color Me Gone"...in the spirit of Roger Lindamood's long standing series of funnycars in the same name
Very nice. Growing up in Southern California, the very bastion of drag racing USA style, left little if any examples of small bore "saloon car racing." I had to venture to Riverside Raceway to see SCCA style club racing. There we had a small sampling of Mini's, BMW's, Datsun 510 and B210 BRE type cars, and the odd left over Cortina. These classes mimicked the Group 2 approach to construction. But alas, no IMPS!
There is one that races in the Pre65 racing series in NZ also. Its a big hit with the fans. Scroll down this page to find it: http://pre65.org.nz/pages/teams/teams.html
