Dallas TX to Winnipeg Manitoba Canada travel tips

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by FatFenderBowTie, Dec 6, 2009.

  1. Going down to Dallas TX to pick up a truck and drive home, looking for things to do on our route from Dallas to Winnipeg Manitoba Canada...

    any suggestions for;

    Dallas, TX.
    Wichita Falls, TX
    Oklahoma City, OK.
    Wichita, KS.
    Kansas City KS/MO
    Des Moines, IA

after that I think we have it covered....

Also looking for some parts anywhere on that route for a 1935 Chevrolet Master or Master Deluxe. Need Drivers front fender, drivers running board and complete wiper assembly minus the motor.

    Thanks for any info!! :D

North of Dallas on the west side of interstate, about Denton, TX I think, is an old junk yard. LOTS of old cars there.

If your building a Ford you might want to stop in at Classic Auto parts in OKC. It would be a leg streach....classicautoparts.com

the junkyard in Denton / Krum is CTC auto ranch.

If you are into warbirds, Addison (North Dallas) has a great museum at the addison airport. Cavanaugh Flight Museum. Most of the planes are fully restored and fly.

Oh oh, a Manitoban set loose in Texas...... this could get ugly. Word of advice: pack your own beer for the trip. They've got stuff down there that they call beer...... but it ain't. It's more like one o' them hoity toity flavored waters with bubbles.

    From a former Manitoban........

Thanks! We got to quite a few Wpg area events over the past two summers. Next year we probably won't get out much at all as I plan to tear the truck apart once it warms up a bit. I'm hoping to have it back on the road for the Super Run in Brandon in August.

  16. Found a place called the Flying Saucer which seems to offer a great assortment of beers...a few in Texas and one in Kansas, also in Texas a place called the Yardhouse.

Called CTC auto ranch, no luck with what I am looking for, sent an email off to classicautoparts.com and French Lake Auto...see what I find there!

    Keep em coming!

    Unless you need to

You don't need to go thru Wichita Falls

    I-35 -north

    to Wichita, Ks to

    135 north

    to 81 north

To Yankton,SD to hwy 50 east to I-29 north to Canada

  18. I just took I-35/Hwy 81 yesterday from Dallas to come home near Omaha. Take I-135/US 81 north of Wichita thru Salina and on to York, NE: cut over on I-80 50 miles east and go to Lincoln, NE and spend the morning or afternoon at Speedway Motors museum. You won't be disappointed. Then you can take US 77 and go north through Wahoo, Fremont up to Sioux City, IA, and catch I-29 there for the rest of the trip across the border into Manitoba.

I have a very good friend from Winnipeg who takes this route all the time to central Kansas to get car trailers to sell back in Winnipeg and even to McPherson, KS (off of I-135 between Wichita/Salina) to the restoration college.

  20. I remember a story my pop told me, the company he was working for was bought out by an American one, and they were told the new boss was very strict and by the book.
They had a company wide meeting in the U.S. and the new boss got up to address the crowd. His opening line was he wanted to welcome all the new Canadians to the group, but he had one question for them all...what's all this eh shit huh? Everyone relaxed after that meeting :D

We will be getting in Dec 28 in the afternoon...and only in Texas for 2 - 3 days. Not for a Friday or a weekend unfortunately.

  21. Just read our weather forecast for the next couple of days...not much snow here yet, but lows at or near -27.0 to -29.0°F

Fat no worries. You can come visit just can't stay more than 5 days, 3 if you're related. We have very stiff immigration laws and such here. :)

We'll leave the gate at the border open for ya. Make sure it closes on your way in and out please and thank you..:D

Please stay in the right lane as you cross with your headlights on, wave and yell "boy howdy" real loud (wondows closed no need to make a specticla of yourself). This way we'll know it is you. We'll be watching. Proceed like you belong and drive the speed limit as you cross.

And we can still get you some all you can eat BBQ just have to go to #2 or #3 choices depending on the area of town you are headed towards.

    NOTE:
Now for the rest of you thinking "Hey I'll just blow in and out, pass through, or even God forbid worse move here".

    WE ARE NOW OFFICIALLY CLOSED!

Please refer to Fats first post on how to cross a border legally and safely. He gave a heads up and was making us aware he was coming to pee on a few trees. And we might even feed him.

For those of you who would like to relocate to Texas please send minimum $50 cash (more in small unmarked bills helps the immigration process) to Ryan, a list of your vehicles, complete tool and parts inventory, resume of your skills that will contribute to the betterment of the HAMB, 3 choices of preferred locations, pictures of your women (lots of those...you can send those to me), and a blank check signed all in large envelope with a self addressed stamped return envelope. You will be put on a list and he'll get back to you...if/when an opening comes up....

Single, hell even married open minded beer and whiskey drinking women, with tools and cars, go to the front of the line and are highly encouraged to apply.:D (I made that part up just send all info directly to me):D:p

Ah yes, I remember that. The winter before wasn't much better. We moved out here in the middle of January, 2008. Just in time for a long cold snap! +3C when we left Calgary at 5am, -29C when we arrived in Neepawa that night. D'oh!!

  27. Look at Calgary now, my friends just blew 5 - 6' of snow out of their yard, here I can still see the grass through the snow!

I believe I have been to this yard, was it CTC's Auto Ranch off I-35 in Denton? The prices were pretty rich, but it was a very cool place. They have a Rudy's BBQ nearby.
