Recently saw a BW T-10 manual trans come up for sale. It's listed as fitting ford. I need one for my mid-60's pontiac. What are the main differences? Can a ford BW be converted to work for GM? Any help would be appreciated.

As far as fitting, the input shaft spline and length will be different, the candlestick will be different diameter, the bolt pattern will be different, and most likely the tailshaft length, spline, and shifter mount pattern and location will be different.

The old ford t-10 was not very strong. That's why Ford went to the Top-loader.

Although many '65 and newer B-O-P bell housings had both G.M. and Ford transmisison patterns, it was the later Ford pattern and not the narrow pattern that Ford T-10s used. For all of the ****ing around you'd have to do to use it behind your Pontiac, you might as well just buy the correct style four speed.

Did you mean to say "T-10's in general, whichever engine they fit" ? I am puzzled how it is that "Ford T-10's" were weak...........as opposed to say.....oh, I don't know...........CHEVY?? :D

That would be because a Chevy engine couldn't break one.......... whereas the ole FE would tear them apart.Too much torque.....................

Keep in mind Studebaker also used the T-10 from 61-64. Early cars used the Ford pattern and later used the Chevy. But as mentioned above, they have their own input shaft, etc.

The BW T-10 was used behind almost every brand until they built their own 4-speeds.A "Ford",T-10 may have both early and late bellhousing patterns,I have a couple of each. They will hold up to power, not as much as a toploader, but OK for most.AMC used them until they closed the doors.409-425HP used them,427-425HP Fords used them,so unless you have a monster engine I wouldn't worry about using one.I have one behind a 292 Y-block and one behind a 302. ROY.

I would personally hold out for a later GM super-T10, which were produced in huge numbers during the 70s. Great transmission. Early T10s are good too but not as strong.
