Pontiac straight eight trans choices

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by moparsled, Nov 3, 2009.

  1. A friend of mine has a '37 Pontiac straight eight with factory top shift three speed, that he is going to put in a lakes modified style roadster. The trans is pretty trashed inside, and we can't find a replacement locally.

    what have you guys done?

Does anybody know where to find a parts source, or replacement stock trans?
Anybody adapted a T5 or other later more-gear trans?
He doesn't relish the thought of an auto- particularly a Hydro, but has anybody gone with an adapter to a late auto?

    thanks gang.

Get in touch with the "Outkasts" that went to the Mitchell South Dakota show. There was a vendor that made adaptors for damn near any motor trans combo, they had several examples. I think it was Bendtsens Speed Gems, but I'm not positive.

This was on display at the show, manual trans was hooked to a GMC V-12.

  3. I have a 3speed stick trans from a '40, I understand it will fit. I am willing to sell it if interested.

Maybe you haven't priced the cost of machining anything lately! My dad got a quote from a well known/reputable shop in Seattle for a simple project and it was $120 per hour.

I'm still stacking nickels to afford the Y-block to C4 adaptor.

Schedule, Quality, Budget..... pick 2 out of the 3 and good luck.

If you get a differant set up outside of a stock replacment, I would be interested in the top shift/cover ***embly to convert my 41 over from a column shift.

Up to a 55 Pontiac/Olds trans will crossover for parts or replacement. Buick also but are closed drive and will need converted over.
