My stainless grill shell is pretty beat up so I was thinking of purchasing the fibergl*** shell from Speedway and painting it body color similar to 32 shells. Has anyone done this , if so I would appreciate any pics. Thanks
I don't know about the quality of the Speedway shell. In 1930 commercial grille shells were stamped out of regular steel and painted. Other than material, they are the same as the auto ones made out of stainless steel. Picture shows a commercial grille shell on a 30 coupe that belongs to my friend and fellow HAMBer Garry Carter.
I have all three gennie grilles hanging on my garage wall at home, one '32 p***enger car, one '31 stainless, and a '30-31 Commercial. I bet you can find someone local who can straighten and repolish your existing stainless shell for about the price of a new shell, if you were interested in keeping it. The Commercial shells are deeper than the stock shells, the trucks had a thicker radiator core.
They are also straight across and don't have the little dip under the blue oval. I suspect the one in bib overhauls pic is a standard stainless car one that must have been worked on to accept paint.
Thanks for the responses guys. I've actually considered both options. Not running a hood,so the extra depth of a commercial grille shell wouldn't be a problem but finding one in decent shape might be. I was thinking the Speedway idea was the quickest, easiest and possibly cheapest option. I guess there's no real rush getting things done since it won't be back on the road till the Spring so I'll keep checking E-Bay and this forum for decent grille shells and look for some place where I might get my stock one refurbished. Thanks again.
I'm thinking for the price of that speedway shell you could probably find a nice original one on ebay to replace yours.
