I would like to know what this fitting is for? I have circled it. It is a 90 degree fitting. I would imagine is is some sort of pressure line but, not sure. It is wrapped in tape but, the location is what my question is about. thank you, Steve Hosting- Sunday April 11, 2010 8th annual Nostalgic Show & Go! Phoenix www.nostalgicshowandgo.org
You're pic is really jacked up, so it's creating doubt in my mind, but I was looking for the TV cable to go in there. Been a while since I played with a 700R4.
Thats where you can hook a pressure gauge for when you are adjusting your tv cable just take that fitting out and put a plug in it
the 90 lets you hook a pressure gauge to it with close fitting floors. Very possibly put there by a rebuilder who knew he'd be verifying pressure later that afternoon.
Thanks, that's good to know. While we're on the topic, what sort of pressure readings should the transmission have in which gears, etc... I have very little, to no experience in setting up a TV cable and would like to know the correct way to go about it. Automatic transmissions are a thing of mystery to me.
i do believe their is a site called "bowtie automatics" that has the info. very critical that the tv cable be setup correctly or $$$ on a rebuild.
http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/index.shtml this is the website you want they have alot of good info and if you dont find it on there you can call and talk to them
With a TV cable mostly what you're looking for is an instant rise in pressure with the tiniest bit of throttle. Transmission pressure is a lot like engine oil pressure, it rises with RPM but kinda caps out 1/3 of the way to max RPM. There is much hoo-haw surrounding TV cables to ensure proper drivability at low throttle positions. But the pressure check itself is a piece of cake. Min number, max number, and does pressure rise with the teensiest bit of throttle, that's all you care about for setup. Just be sure to do it with tires in the air so if something's wrong you're not loading the trans.
Firt of all , If you are not a trained automatic repair spe******t knowing those pressue values are going to only clog your mind. you would never read them on a regular basis. Because of the speciality "shift kit" valve body repair kits used by so many techs and made differently by so many companies, the old saying "there are many ways to skin a cat", These values are changed by the use of these many different kits and they vary drasticly from one to the other, depending on wheather You adjust pressure with an orfice size or just soften it with a spring in the ac***ulator. Both ways change the way the shift feels . Not knowing what You have this will help You set any 700 from the get go. ! remove trans pan, this is a must!! Then You need to check a couple things 1. depress throttle, making sure You get wide open throttle, check to see if carb is wide open, if not adjust it now, or ck throttle body and adjust it now! Once you are sure You are getting full wide open throttle go to 2, follow tv cable down to transmission and You will see the linkage work on a plunger valve in the valve body . This is how it looks , have some one depress on the throttle and You watch and see if the little valve is shoved all the way up to the aluminum bushing in the valve body. If it is not, then ck linkage. at carb or at tv cable bracket, don't stop untill You get it, then reinstall pan and You are done underneath the car.Now fill with fliud and test drive.( now you aren't going to burn up the trans because you know that You have full throttle pressure at wide open throttle) Now You can back down the tv cable untill You reach your desired feel, Remeber this under light throttle get trans to 3 rd gear, now depress throttle to wide open, trans should downshift to 1st gear and will upshift as desired and be right. Takes a little time but after a few times its easy and you will be your own hero. this will get your shift together. Same way on 200 r4 Ps .dont stop untill You get the 3rd to 1st downshift or it will eventually fail. (or 2nd to 1st downshift)
bowtie overdrive. lots to read should print it so you cn see it. if you do some business with them they rent the pressure gauge and detailed instructios.
Never done the 3rd to 1st kick down before, the GM trans guy that taught me about the 700/200 r4 told me to adjust for desired upshift feel, then light acceleration until it shifts to 2nd, immediatly floor it, trans must shift back to 1st. If not adjust cable until it does. I've done several this way, and knock on wood, all have been in service with no problems yet. What is the need to allow it to get all the way to 3rd to get the kick down set? I am not saying this is wrong or right, just curious as to why you do it this way? What might be different in the setting from a 3rd gear kickdown such as you do versus a 2nd gear kick down like I do? Once I have done them this way, I also check the kick down at speed, and it always seems to work fine. Sorry if this is considered a highjacking, but I was hoping to find out what I might be doing wrong. Thanks.
Actually You can go to second gear and accomplish the same. But if you go to third and stay in the throttle, it should return to 1st, don't let up let it shift back to 2nd and then to third you can ck both of those up shifts at once. I Was at a trans seminar in portland or. once and Steve Garret of Hydramatic ( who I believe engineered the 200 r 4) suggested I do this. I'm sure there are those who do this different, just worked for me. I built oregon state police cars and city police cars and they are tough on Transmissions. You aren't doing anything wrong . in my opinion . semi sweet for me
