  1. Just last week a guy brought me his recently purchased 1950 merc to get a quote on correcting some suspension issues and adding air ride with a few other minor repairs like making the door's open and close smothly. He told me his merc was a frame off build so when i put it up on the rack and saw someone had covered over the rusted off inner rockers i was just dum founded at what i was looking at. All the suspension upgrades like the camaro clip & rear end were installed so poorly with large open gaps and welds that would make seagull shit look good. This poor guy is not happy at all. He told me he bought it from a classic car dealer in tx through e-gay?

Here is a copy of the add he e-mailed me
Offering an elegant chopped top custom off frame with complete build up photo album with over 100 photos from off frame body to chopping top. Here are the specs 1950 Mercury with top notch paint job that gives is a bad ass look yet classy, 350/350 old school bat air cleanr, 4 brl. edelbrack carb, period correct 50's style dimond tuck interior (( old school )) full GM chassis, giving it power steering, power brakes with discs at front and a nice smooth ride tilt wheel, The body modifications and custom features are as follows: chopped 4.5 inches, glass all around , camaro sub frame, and rearend geared for high way, monte carlo head lights, pontiac tail lights, full metal dash, Shaved Hood, Shaved Deck Lid, Shaved Door Handles with poppers, shaved trunk with power popper, frenched electric antena, air shocks in rear, Chrome Lake Pipes, dummy Spots lights, AM FM CD with remote, electric wind shield wipers, horn, high beam and low beam, Gobs Of Room In Back Seat Area For 2 Or 3 Adults. radial tires. If you like attention, you will get plenty with this Sled. paint alone $7000......this merc is an excellent driver and can be driven any where.
take a look at the pic's under side and you be the judge if it looks like the add describes.

This year I have seen and repaired way to many kustom mercs sold & bought in the $25k to $85k range that look real good in pic's and sound good in an add but when you look closer or try to drive them they are nothing like the add describes. Yes even $85k. Just looked at one 2 weeks ago that has a major over steer handeling issue and front tire clearnce issue due to it's chanelled over an unreinforced stock 80's gm chassie and floor pan with ART shock waves .

I've been doing the same thing here a lot lately! A good friend of mine just paid $65k for a Merc convertible and I swear, the car looked GREAT!!! Until I got it on the rack and started looking at all the crap they tried to hide. Luckily most of it was repairable and for under $5000 I got it up to par, BUT... why not do the work right the first time??? Just one instance... Both doors had beautiful gaps front and rear, but they both scrubbed when you'd close them. I played around with 'em for an hour or two before I finally brought out the DA and I ended up hogging off a bunch of mud on BOTH doors and BOTH jambs!
Another thing I found... wrong screws, no lock washers, a bunch of nuts and bolts only partially tightened!!! What are these idiots doing???

btw, EXK, the pics didn't show up.

I'm amazed at how people will pay the big bucks for a "custom" car and never look under it or have someone do it for them! Yeah, shame on the seller, builder, or whoever. But caveat emptor-buyer beware.

When I'm on ebay I figure if the seller can't even spell/won't take the time for a simple spell check, the product probably isn't top notch either.

  8. Just my opinion..........

While the lying dealer is an unscrupulous asshole, the buyer had the ultimate responsibility to make sure he was getting value for his money. What do you think the chances are that the new owner will try and pull the same stunt on someone else?

The two descriptions and the location are too similar to pass up -- if this is the wrong sled I'll buy the next round

Wow! That looks like my '56 Old's! And I paid 2 G's for it, AND it was at least a 2 door hardtop, and I was pissed when WE started getting deeper into IT!

Ewww....A massive cover up operation has been undertaken, eh?

B.S.,There are a lot of guys out there that probably got C's in English and A's in Auto Shop, myself included so that doesn't mean sqat.I would venture to say that many of the pioneers in our hobby do not have "fancy" educations and learned by doing rather than reading about it.Over the years some of the best REAL mechanics and bodymen I have met never completed high school.

" Buyer beware" He must have more money than sense to buy something like that without looking a little closer first. Thats an expensive mistake!! Just the pictures of the car would have had me thinking twice about it that chop looks funky.

It never ceases to amaze me at the number of people who will drop big money on a car and not spend a little to have it looked at first. That means looked at by someone who knows crap when they see it. That goes for any car. The excitement of getting a new ride must make people brain dead.

Wow, too bad he didn't have someone close take a look at it...one peek behind that rear tire would have sent anyone running at that price!

Is it just me, or does that patch behind the drivers rear tire scream "wait 'til the bondo cracks"?

Don't mean to beat down on someone that got screwed BUT you should always have the car checked out by someone you know & trust , yourself or a professional . It's worth the few hundred dollars to have them check the car over than loose all the money you spent to buy the car . The on line auction is the best place to rip people off and is done many times .
You really can't blame the guy for ripping you off , blame yourself for not taking the steps to make sure you DON'T get screwed ! That car has way to many periods of time wrapped up in to a so called classic ! Remember mud & paint can make a car worth thousands more than it is really worth .
I hate to see it done and the so called P-yP-l will not get your money back and it is in no way a safe way to do business ! i have gotten ripped off and they told me because the ad states AS IS . But the ad didn't wasn't what I received . So after all the red tape and bullshit from P/P , I got a shitty intake that is a boat anchor .
All I am saying is there are too many people using on line auctions to rip people off ! Take the time and go yourself or pay someone to check the item out . If you don't get it because the auction time ran out , there are always many more good or better ones just around the corner !

i don't care if your paying 500 or 50k for a car, you should either look at yourself or have someone look at it for you. i really don't have any sympathy for people who buy cars sight unseen, then complain about the shoddy workmanship. shame on him, especially if he is a "car guy", and especially if he's a hamber, because i'm sure a hamber in the area would have gone to look at the car for him. i would do it in a heartbeat if the situation came up. it don't hurt to ask.
