Just call it a hot rod, we love old cars here and "rat" is not a term of endearment.

welcome and that plymouth is cool ,what ever you want to call it.That thing is long and you can have a back seat to bring along friends and family.

  13. Some folks here get bent out of shape by the rat rod term, and I really think it's a question of semantics. If you are more concerned about getting it on the road and having fun with it than you are with having a slick paint job or a show car interior, there's nothing wrong with that. Most of the hot rods built 50 years ago didn't have high dollar paint and upholstery, so that's in keeping with traditional hot rodding. I think the term "rat rod" for a lot of people conjures up images of rolling death traps and, I assure you I've seen some junk that I wouldn't ride 100 feet in (crappy welds on steering and suspension components, bodies not securely attached to the frame, etc.) It's fine if it looks like an old hot rod that was just pulled out of the barn where it sat 50 years without seeing the light of day (my truck is built to look like a well-worn shop truck for the Ford dealership that was here 1928-1956), as long as it is mechanically reliable, the wiring doesn't catch on fire, it can stop quick and straight so you're not fighting for control if you have to slam on the brakes when some fool pulls square out in front of you, it handles predictably even on wet roads, and you have at least a fair chance of walking away from it if you are in an accident with it.

    Did somebody say rat rod?

    All rite!

Get some air bags dude. They are a must. Go with patina all the way, and red rims.

Make sure even if you can weld to weld like a dirtdobber. It gives it that authentic detailing everybody looks for.

You are going to need a theme for the car. For example my pic at the Round Up this year had a "Sea Hunt" theme. Mini diving helmets for air cleaners, pilot wheel, and so on. It ruled.

How about an ancient Egyptian theme? You could paint it flat gold, pyramid shaped air cleaners, and for that over the top coolness take all the wheels off and get you car club buddies to carry the car with you in it dressed as Isis.

Or you could build a nice mild traditional hot rod, stick around and get some other ideas (but mine are the best), not get you feelings hurt, and enjoy yourself...but that would be boring. We have an opening in the Road Raja's if you want to follow my advice.

Welcome '31! Your building your own car and that's cool. You could have just bought whatever you wanted, but you chose to build it yourself so that should mean something I think. Keep rockin' man!

welcome, build it like you want, just make it safe!!

  21. Welcome. This site is geared towards the traditional hot rod not the so called Rat Rod. Back in the day when we used the word RAT, we where referring to a hot rod with a big block motor. Not sure of the official meaning these days... and could care less. It’s your prerogative to call your car what you want…

Welcome, Looks like you are off to a good start on your 31 Hot Rod.
It is a model U which carried over into 1931. The PA started later in 1931
and carried over into 1932 when the PB started. Good luck with the build,
take your time and build it safe.

Forget people like this.....Build what you want, call it what you want. Just make is safe and reliable. The term does not bother me at all. Most of them if you put a pic of your car with the term Hot Rod in the title they will love it, yet you put the same pic in there with the term Rat Rod and they hate it. A lot of people here are too concerned with the term used to describe their car. But this IS the place to be to learn...........WELCOME !
