hi guys. i've been pokin around here for a while now. . . haven't had any unanswered questions yet. didn't find the thread that worked for me about this one.

anyone know how to get all the original specs out of the VIN tag numbers.
i've got two to look up.

the first one is for my 54 ford coupe, i'm looking to see what actual model it was, and the original specs on it,
the other one is for my 64 ford 3/4 ton longbed. i need to know if it is a 223 or a 262 engine so i can pre order the correct clutch. The truck is my daily driver and need to get that information before i'm broke down. . . haha

numbers are as follows, any help would be fantastic! thanks a million!
    xoxo Denise.

    54 ford.

  4. More than likely the engine in the 3/4 is the 223. The 262 went in the heavy 1-1/2, 2, etc. ton trucks.

  5. Introduction?

Some light trucks got the 262 in '64. By all accounts rare, but not totally unheard of.

The engine code for '64 F-series pickups is the 4th character, "B". According to the following link, "B" corresponds to a 262:

The above link also details some visual differences between the 262 and 223. It may be wise to visually confirm that it is indeed a 262, as it's entirely possible that the engine has been swapped or the VIN plate is from a different truck.

1950 merc... THANKS... that's what i was wanting to know. Now i just have to figure out how to find out if it was the customline OR mainline. I'm thinking it was the customline, it's got quite a lot of knobs and swtiches, the trim was pulled and welded when i got it and i had to re-do all the bodywork on those areas and on the wrecked fenders.
Buddah and Big M- thanks for the truck info! i was under the impression that i had a 262 because my p/u was used as a forestry fire truck, i figured if it's somewhat of an emergency/fleet vehicle, they might have made sure it was equipped for the job.
thanks so much for the info.

    Oh. McTim.
introduction. . . I actually did an introduction years back, then fell off the hamb,
    Current intro is as follows:
My name's Denise, I fool around with automotive artwork and unofficially apprentaced in my good friend's shop for a place to stay in his house when i got dropped back in Bakersfield. While I was there I did a lot of bodywork, some primer jobs, and generally was the shop hand while he did all the pinstriping, kustom fabrication and welding . . . I currently live in Wyoming (just for a little while longer) while I teach art cl*** at a public school district. I rebuilt and did some mild custom work on my 54 and i drive my 64 p/u daily, wind, snow and ice. I am SOOOO ready to get back into the sunshine!

    again.... THANKS GUYS!
    xoxo

Do you have any photos of the engine in the '64? A key identifying feature is the extra reinforcing rib on the driver's side of the block. There are also differences in the timing covers.
