    From Allpar:

"The Torqueflite centered on a rather simple planetary gear set that was named the "Simpson gear set," after its inventor. As later racing versions of the Torqueflite proved, you could increase the amount of torque capability by machining more "beef" into the gear set."

"Ford Motor Company was so impressed with the Torqueflite that it attempted to quietly buy the rights to manufacture a sort of "copycat." The story, however, was quickly picked up by the automotive magazines. Ford reportedly had paid Chrysler $7.5 million which was a big chunk of change in 1957! The direct result was the 1958 Ford built "Cruise-O-Matic" that was available on all standard Ford engines. It was not, however, a Torqueflite, but a Ford automatic built around the Simpson gear set."

I just delivered a '62 Chevrolet Biscayne more door to my uncle 250 miles away yesterday. Solid old car, untouched and local its whole life, powered by a 235 and a three on the tree. Gas mileage on it was around 17.5 to 18 mpg best I could figure. I probably averagered 60 to 65 mph, though, so I'm sure if I'd have driven it 55 the whole way it would probably have been closer to 19 or 20 mpg. Of course the car probably had not been driven farther than 20 miles at a time in nearly 30 years.
