Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by VANDENPLAS, Dec 14, 2009.

  1. hi all im very new here and not sure if this is the right place or not.so if someone can answer my question or at least point me in the right direction that would be great.

i own a fifty chevy fleetline that i am modding this winter.so far i have.
opened up the driveline with a gen 2 camaro diff
a t5 outta a s10 with the hotrod works adapterplate
    converting it to 12volt
    custom made stainless sidepipes
and im gonna cut and weld my front up rights and i milled a set of blocks for the rear to lower it.

now my question is i have heard that a jag front end is a fairly easy swap into one of these cars and that it has been done and this is the site with all the answers.

i used to be a jag tech for a number of years so i can get the parts for free or pretty darn close to it i just want to speak to someone who has done the swap or pics or at least point me in the right direction.

i have tried the search function and it dont seem to work well for me or maybe im just that stupid.

thanks i hope i can help all you out in the future

    thanks.

Sorry, I don't have any info about the swap. but, try the Advanced Search feature and search just the h.a.m.b., not the entire site. Use "jag front clip" or "jag ifs", that should bring something up if it's here.

  3. Thanks for the link but it is different then a 49-54 chevy

the info is out there i just cant find it

please someone point me in the right direction

Silly question, but why the jag front? Seems like the exotic parts are neat, but are they practical? I get the "free" part - that is definitely practical!!!!!!!

I know the Jag IFS swap works on a 48-51 Ford F-1 very nicely!! I dunno about the chevy though....

Sounds to me like you need to just grab a tape measure and start comparing the front suspensions. Things like distance from the frame to the wheel mounting surface would be a major key to me. I'm sure there's more, but someone else'll have to point them all out for you.

why dont you take the camaro front clip?

  10. Camaro's too wide.

Jag front end you can buy all the parts to redo at your chain parts houses, gives you discs and a rack and pinion, has the same wheel bolt pattern as stock, and is damned near a bolt on. Two of the holes on the Jag line up with holes in the Chevy frame. From what I've seen of pictures of installs, a wedge shaped piece of steel plate welded to one or the other lets you bolt it the rest of the way up.

Has to be from a 1985 or older sedan, XJ6 or the like, newer ones are too wide.

53-54 uprights will give you approximately 1 inch of drop, and from there you can cut you're stock coils to desired height.

That dude certainly is a member. :D

And not really exotic. Standard off the shelf wheel bearings for one. But it comes out as a unit. Just need to make upper shock mounts. I'm probably gonna do another one here in a week or two.

  13. Jag front ends are used frequently in the UK - lots of advantages. Post on the UK NSRA website and you'll get advice from people who have done this lots.

  14. Thanks for the info.
Im gonna check out that brit link
any more tips or advise would be great as i think this info will help all 49-54 owners.
    Cheers

I have an 88 xj-6 thats a primo donor. I was all exited till I read "85 and prior".

  16. 88 was the cusp of the end of the series 3 and the start of the series 4
the series 4 is a wider car
the series 2 and 3 are basicly identical as far as front suspensions go with just some minor diffrences.
sooooooooooooooooo if your ride is a series 3 your good to go.
series 4 is the car that single handedly bankrupted jag.

  17. stilll looking for info tons of good stuff out there for trucks and other makes but i cant find anything with any real details for the 49-54 chevy car

please help a feller out.......anytime yer in my neck o the woods the beer is on me

I know that your hubs should be GM pattern, right? But one of the problems (a**** many) I had with my XJS, was the backspacing is extreme and limits your choices as far as wheels go.

  22. The xjs front end is way different then a xj6 or xj12

i found a bunch of good info on some aussie sites and a front clip up to 89 series 3 is the ticket.

    Thanks all who responded
when i get into this i will post a write up
    cheers

XJ-S's used that same front end until the end of their production in the 90s.

The common cars that we would use as donor cars (IFS or IRS) are:

    Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3 XJ6 and XJ12 cars.

XJ-S cars. Later XJ-S cars had outboard rear brakes.

There were other Jaguars that used these same suspension units but they are not common in the US. There are zillions of Series 3 XJ's and XJ-S's rusting away dead in the driveway that the owners will let you haul away for free.

As far as 'exotic' parts, nothing is further than the truth. Wheel bearings and races, for example, are the same part numbers as good old Chivrolet.

  24. nothing exotic about these front ends all bushings and bearings are available in the aftermarket.\
they come with 4 piston calipers as well.
the power steering pump off a v12 looks like your typical chevy pump.

the only thing that can be pricey is a power rack.
but there are people that rebuild these things for relativly cheap.
theres a guy local that does it for 175 and an extra 50 for the poly rack bushes.

gotta series 3 at my buddies shop that i can pull whatever i need for free.
gonna get this done in the spring when there is no more snow on the ground.

    thanks to all that responded.

Inside the arms on the crossmember is about 34" on the XJ6 and XJ12if that helps. So if the frame rails are around 32-34" outside to outside the crossmember will set right up in there real nice.

Can you possibly try and find something of substance to add to a thread and quit with the running your mouth?
