Got an old Hossfeld machine ( early xmas ) ,,and starting to try and figure out how to use it. I want to try and make the roll cage pieces. My question is how do I know ( or maybe the question is ) How do I set the machine to stop at the right places when making the bends ? It's a #2 manual machine,,if that makes a difference
his program will calculate that for you using the centerlines of the tubing as referece points. I tried to attach it, but I'm a luddite. Google a program called BEND IT FOR WINDOWS Its a great little program and its free!
Was thinking that was what I was up against ,,just trying to get as much info prior ,,so I don't have to big a pile of mistakes
The bend indicated by the arrow might be a problem. Using 1 3/4" Dia. tubing, the radius appears to be much too small for any die set that Hossfeld makes for that tube diameter. I'm not sure but I think the shortest available centerline radius for that tube diameter is 6". Someone correct me if I'm mistaken.
My dad made me an adjustable angle gauge from some wood. It has legs about 18" long. I use that to let me know when I'm close on the degrees of bend. I always over bend slightly because it's easier to take a little bend out rather than return the tube to the bender to add a little more.
My die set is 6" radius also, you should be able to mount a stop on the big metal ring so that once you figure out where you need to stop bending, you can bolt down the stop which will let you replicate your first bend. Also, get a tube & make a 90 degree bend & mark the tube and die so you have an idea where the tube will start it's bend on other pieces.....you can cut off your practice bend, hang it by the bender & refer back to it later. well just using the cage idea from these prints,,and modifying it to something I feel will be a stronger set up...made the base frame back in the summer...front axle is just about in now ,,then cage...im glad its getting used too
Hossfeld catalog shows 1 3/4" dies with a CLR as small as 3 1/2". Their dies have a raised mark in the casting that shows where the bend starts. I put a little white paint on it to make it easier to see.
My ones set has hash marks on it but the other not,,though that set also seems like it has some kinda protective coating over it as well,,so marks might be under that stuff
I thought the under 6" radius on 1-3/4 tube was discontinued. I call these guys alot, and don't believe you can get anything under a 6" radius for roll cage material. Carl ***Neither my 1-3/4 nor my 1-5/8 die sets have any marks showing exactly where the tube starts its bend and the instruction manual walks you though the process of making a bend, and how to mark that tube begining / end so you know in the future how to figure out just how much tube you need on both sides of the bend.*****
Yeah ,, I have to find an old manual for it,,well glad they at least "made" a smaller one,,just need to find it now.. I see ones on ebay that say the "fit" the Hossfeld.. Anyone used these or know anything about em?
