Went and looked at a Corvair an older gentleman had for sale. Bought it and will fix it up for the wife.

Talked to the guy for a while. He is a wealth of knowledge.

Ha ha now Ralph Nader can really kiss my ***... I'll be running some of these since he hated them so much.

And the wife digs it. I'm hoping it'll end up her driver. Well unless it ends up being really fun to drive...

    cool
like i posted before at my dad's old dealership the corvairs just sat out back, bought em real cheap had some super ones and some plain ones, my favorite was a staion wagon, 700 model, 4 door, hatch in the back, it is still runing around here in south mn, , vans, and cars, from a turbocharged monza to a camping van, the old mechanic at the place was an A&P mechanic from korean war times ,and just loved the air cooled engines. he could really make em run ,the 6 carb setup is awesome to look at ****s to get running right, i like a custom little 4 bbl intake ,,CLARKS corvair was the main guy to get stuff from ,the only one i never bought was a offer from a guy that had a YENKO STINGER all the papers and race history ,i was getting out of them at the time ,and wasnt interested, [IMG]

It does have the leaf. But I'm not worried, I talked to him for awhile about it as well as other Corvair things. I'm kind of thinking it'll make a nice little mild custom.

I dig the wagon a lot... very cool... one of the other guys I talked to this past weekend also had a cherry Greenbriar van. Very cool.

  7. Nice score, but I wanna see more pix of the CJ-5! [IMG]

A Corvair convert is on my want list for the distant future.

Yeah the CJ-5 is sweet. It's got the original F head 4 banger and a very rare overdirve. Very cool and a mint restoration. The guy also has a mint Oliver tractor and is restoring an old Internaional Cub tractor. When I go over there tomorrow I'll try and get more pics of the Jeep and the tractors. Very cool older gentleman. He's 77 and is very cool to hang out and talk to.

My mom had a 66 when I was in high schooland the only problem she ever had except for the oil leak is it would throw the belt every now and then,,,,,,fun car to drive!HRP

  10. Sounds like the guy I wanna be when I get, um, older.

nothing looks sweeter than a Row Crop 66... except an Oliver Diesel! [IMG]

Hope the wife enjoys the Corvair. Mine wants a Bug, that's the closest I'll get to a Corvair for awhile. [IMG]

If you look in the back corner behind the gray/blue one you can see part of the one Oliver's peeking out...

    Yo Zman!

I can't believe you got that car for $100! No doubt it will be a slick little cruiser when you are done with it. The seller... was he friends with the guy hanging out in the Greenbriar at the fairgrounds swap meet? That van was sweet. You're definitely hanging with the right crowd for corvair knowledge. So, were you able to drive it home, or did you have to haul it? Great score either way!

The red coupe next to the Greenbriar was his. He's going to bring it by on Saturday. I'm probably going to need a little help unloading it from the trailer [IMG] I'll need a battery and I want to go over the brakes and stuff before I try driving it.

Yeah, the red coupe was nice... sorta got eclipsed by the van though (total eclipse of the coupe?) LOL Just let me know when to be there on Saturday. I'll even leave the bad musical puns at home.

I really like vairs. This one lady I know was saying how she always wanted a 66 convertable, so I told her about Pomona, how she might find one there. Well, she sure did. Got a very good deal on a rock solid one, faded paint, but nice interior. The brand new motor was built up something serious... i've never, ever heard a 6cyl sound like that one! It would put most V-8's to shame, just from the growl coming out of it.

I know where a couple rampside pickups have been languishing away by the road with for sale signs. I was looking at them one day thinking it would be cool to put a newer front drive engine and tranyy in there. Does anyone remember the one in some magazines with an Olds Toronado engine in the back seat?

Sorry, but those cars are turds at best... A fully restored one goes for like 3K. Oil burnin' engineering nightmares. Hey why dont you put a V8 in one and really waste some money?

I'm not trying to restore it. It'll be a driver. As for the oil burning, they're actually more prone to leak, but that's because idiots over tighten the oil pan and dimple it and don't bother to install viton seals on the pushrod tubes. I got no problem with them. Sounds like one whooped your *** once to me...

I think they're kinda neat, but I'm a power junkie. I'd just rebody a '78 Malibu with a Corvair body like this Canadian guy did. I prefer the Sport Coupes, though.

I hear ya. But one thing to do is if there are any SCCA roadraces in your area check them out. There are still some Corvairs out there kicking ***. More often than not it's the turbo'd ones, but they are out there. One of the things I've looked at already is a guy who makes a manifold to put the 3 barell Weber from the 911 on them. Pretty cool and they can be made to handle the twisties. But mostly right now I want to turn it into a nice little driver...

I know. I've been researching 'Vairs for a long while now. I think the Porsche-type stuff is kinda interesting, but I'm a lot more interested in liquid cooled V8s. I think this is because I got my start with muscle cars instead of VWs or something. I sort of view Corvairs as a good start to a pre-'67 Chevrolet Ponycar. Good styling, but the mechanicals could be a bit more musclecar-ish for me - after all, a Turbo Corvair is like 180hp tops, right?

If you use some of the modern technologies with the turbo stuff you can get double that. But you need to be pretty methodical about it. I'm pretty psyched about the guy who rebuilt this motor, he line bored the mains and the cam bearings and pretty much did it right. The thing with these motorss is they are also very light. I worked at a shop for a bit in the 80's that did a lot of 911's, the corvair definately reminds me of them and you can use a lot of the tricks on them. I figure with a little tweaking and some bolt on parts I can get about 150 out of this one. It's a fresh 110 motor as is...

I've seen a few mid-engine V-8 cars that haul *** and handle well. One in particular is a multi-time Silver State Challenge veteran. Great car.

I've always wanted to swap a V-8 into a 914 for the same thrill with even less weight. I drove one once- now I must have one before I die.

Great stuff. I loved the lines on the '66 corvair coupes. The smoothest.

The one I've got in my mother-in-law's garage is a '66 with a 4.3 V6 mounted in the rear. I hope to get it on the road by next summer.
There is a good forum called VirtualVairs if you want some info.

I've always liked the air cooled cars... vans, beetles... vairs...

But, the V8 swap into the back of a vair takes the cake! [IMG]

Aww yes... Corvairs- my previous addiction. '67 and 65'. Had about a million hours in the '65 before some !@*$%!! #!&$# turned left in front of me. Not much too those front ends. Prolly saved my head though. A buddy of mine just bought one with a V8... IN THE FRONT!... off of eBay for 1,800. I'll post some picks when he gets it here.

BTW: For anybody in Kansas that's interested in Corvairs, check out Sunnyside Salvage up by Newton. Vans, pick-ups and all. I think I counted about a dozen of 'em last time I was there. Lots of motors and parts crammed in the vans too.
