  4. 1 or 1-1/2 at most. You can also go with dropped uprights or you can step you a-arms. Todd

Cut them ,but do yourself a favor and use a cutoff wheel and not a torch .Old springs are unpredictable on drop.I cut 1 1/2 coils from a 60 Chevy car i used to have and it dropped it over 3 inches .I'd start there and then set the car back on the wheels ,bounce it a few times to settle it and see how it looks.I wouldnt cut more than 2 coils no matter what on the front.Good luck with it...

dont make it too low you wont be able to drive the thing..... ive cut 2 coils out before though but it was on the bump stops pretty much all the time.

they do make dropped uprights, or if you got the skills and the balls you can channel the body.....

'53-'54 uprights will drop it a bit more than an inch if you want to keep costs down. Chop the spring one coil at first, you can take more later if you don't like the look. Trust me, too low is not good! It looks cool, but you can't drive the thing in the real world.
Dropped uprights are the way to go.
'49-'54 Chevys have an odd small diameter spring, never found anything else that fits.
