Hello everybody, well I finally got my 235 to start and she will run for about 5 seconds and then she'll dye on me, I feel like I'm pretty close w my timing cause it would'nt fire without it being close correct? But now how do I know if I need to try advancing or retarding it? I am getting fuel, and primed the carb w fuel so I dont think thats the problem but I am not very experienced w timing. there is a kink in the vacuum line from the distributor to the carb, should I take the line off and see what happens, I dont know what will happen if I take it off. Thanks for any help

  2. Take your advance line and **** on it to make sure you have no vacuum leak at the advance canister and replace the line if it's kinked. If you have a leak at the advance, you'll have a huge leak that will screw up any effort to keep it running. My 235 advance canister died one day and I couldn't keep it running long enough to see if the distributor body was turning. Good luck.

.......what kickstart said. have a '58 235 in my '54 had same prob. after timing/vacuum adjustment check fuel. put in a clear gl*** fuel filter. found out my tank was throwin' clots just often enough to cause that prob as well. ended up w/fiter on both sides of the fuel pump - and cleaned the tank.

    simple/stupid stuff usally Ed

Well I dont have a canister, it just comes off the distibutor, I might be calling it the wrong name, the line from the distributor goes straight to the base off the carb

  6. An engine will fire with the timing way off but in the vicinty of the ballpark but that doesn't mean it's good enough at all. The 235 likes it's timing/carb adjustment/valve adjustment perfect. My experience has been that my 235 just barely runs unless everything is perfect or almost so. There are only a few places for vacuum leaks on your engine but with mine, any leak is huge and enough to kill the engine. Have a friend work the throttle for you, make sure the distributor is turning from the advance and set your timing with a light, not by ear.

  7. The vacuum advance line goes from the base of the carb and ends at the vacuum advance canister on the distributor.

I reckon 5 seconds is enough to empty the fuel bowl, you sure the fuel pump is working ? or **** in the carb? thats what it sounds like to me,
    good luck

Yeah I pulled the fuel pump, and just finished rebuilding the carb, and have a clear fuel filter on it so I think it should be pretty clean

if you got fuel, it might be the mixture, pull a plug and see if its all sooty, and stinks of petrol, lean the mixture if it is, wind the idle screw right down as well to get it to run fast, then start your adjustments.
you'll get it, Im sure :)
    all the best Nick
