i'm gonna be getting a 51 chevy with a 235,,,,,i plan on putting split exhaust manifolds on, but i'm not sure what will give me the best sound...my thought was to get a couple of really short glasspacks or steelpacks, mount them as close to the engine as possible and then run pipes all the way back,,,,,wondering if anyone can help me out by telling me what you did,,,also considering running straight pipes with no mufflers, but i'm not sure how loud they would be,,,,any help/advice appreciated....
I split my ford manifold 4-2, I'm running 1 3/4 pipes with 14" glasspacks all the way at the rear of the car. It raps pretty loud, I love the sound, but it does pop pretty bad on decelleration. I've heard of some guys running a muffler in only one pipe, but I'm not sure what that sounds like. I'm sure another HAMBer has tried it, though.....
I'm running 2 1/4 inch stainless duals with 14" mufflers 48" forward of the rear bumper, it is LOUD on rapid acceleration and backs off and pops real nice when decelerating down a hill. If I don't hammer it, it is quiet enough not to get me in trouble so far. It was great fun on hwy 1 on the Ego-rama, the other guy's like being behind me to listen to the six banger. B B
Something I was taught by lowriders and vatos in Whittier back in 96...split manifold with one 6" glass pack on one side and straight on the other...best heard with 1 3/4 pipes. Same think I am going to do on my 55
Never heard of one muffler trick before. Are straight pipes really loud??Same kinda deal as open pipes on a bike??Run really small dia. piping? Was gonna ask this my-self!Thanks AL
From what I have heard, running smaller pipe diam makes it rap better. Which makes some sense from a logic standpoint. A smaller pip will require a higher exhaust gas velocity, when it exits the pipe into the air, it is going faster and gives a different sound. As to mufflers or not, if you run tailpipes all the way out the back, it will be loud only behind the car. Not too loud, but how late do you need to get home and not get your neighbors upset? The cheapest glasspacks are easy to put in later if you decide it needs a little quieter.
On my 235 in my 53 pickup, I'm running big aluminized pipe with flowmaster 40's, it has a deep throaty sound at idle and low RPM but when I push into it, it gets that nice inline six rap we all love. I've also got race ready's just in front of the mufflers for when I wanna make alot of noise. Nothin like downshifting to 3rd at about 60 and whatching the cars around you part. With the race ready's I can have the sound I love and be able to cap em' if the wife or kid are riding with me. After about a half hour it will get your ears ringing. If you come out the back it prob. won't be as bad though. I'd say if you don't have the spousal or kid factor go with straight pipes, if you don't like it you can add packs or mufflers later on for not much more, you'll have all the pipe. Mongo
Im running a 12 and a straight on my '51 w/ a 216. Sounds kickass. Not sure the diameter of the pipe. I know they are not the small pencil tips. but they have a real badass sound

Do any of you happen to have a .wav file or something that has the one muffler trick applied? My car has a rotted out exhaust right under the floor on the driver's side (single exhaust) and the existing system is a glass pack only. The car is not loud at all really, or at least a lot quieter than I figured it would be. It sounds like an old grain truck or something. I'm meaning to get the full exhaust sometime though because you can definately smell it in the cab while hanging out at stop lights.
my '60 belair has the stock pipe back over the axle, where it's split over to the passenger side. both of those pipes were split again, with a pair of pencil tips. four lights, four tips...it sounds great, even WITHOUT a muffler. yep, no muffler, and it's surprisingly mellow sounding, even on highway. it will cackle when i let off, but it sounds good, not too irritating. the '62 biscayne is split behind the motor, goes into a pair of Summit's Flowmaster knock-offs and scavenger pipes that exit at the rocker, in front of the rear wheels. quiet rumble, despite the short length, probably 'cause there's not much volume passing through each side. of the two, i prefer the '60, it just sounds cooler. mf
Since you are talking about '51s with 235s, thought I'd share a shot of my engine. Dual Webers, headers, will have 2" exhaust with 24" glasspacks. Should be in the car in a week or two.
Man, I hate to say anything because it looks like you worked so hard on those fuel lines. . . but i have been warned away from rigid mounting copper . . supposedly it tends to work harden from vibration and crack. . then your pretty motor will catch on fire. Anyway, maybe you know better. . but you might want to check it out and use short lengths of rubber at all of the intersections.
Yeah, I've read the warnings on copper, thus the mounts to keep it from moving around. I'll be keeping an eye on it. I like the contrast of the copper against the other stuff. Yes, need to introduce myself still...
The best sound by far is straight 1 1/2 pipes all the way back with pencil tips NO GLASSPACKS they will kill your rap. Also a split manifold has a way better sound than any headers or even the corvette manifold.
