As usual the internet is full of conflicting info, I'm interested in the exact location and style of the '33 Willys Model 77 VIN. Some sources say it's stamped in the left frame others say there was a separate metal tag attached to the frame. Any input or pics of the VIN would be appreciated.
Like I said, "full of conflicting info". They may not have called it a VIN in '33 but the term is recognized.
I bought a 1938 buick coupe without a ***le and no motor..I tried to find the ***le with the number on the tag on the body and was told they used the engine number on the ***le..
VIN stampings seem to have been random. I have several original Model 77 frames and some original cars. An early 1933 has it stamped on the side of the front p***enger side rail just behind the front spring hanger. Another has it stamped on top of the right rear kickup and then also on the driver side frame rail just ahead of the cowl. I have a '33 sedan body with a VIN plate on the driver side floor. My later 440 Willys just have an aluminum tag riveted to the front cross member and a data plate with VIN on the p***enger side at the side of the cowl. There is no definitive correct answer to this question.
I would look the frame over. My expierence is that there where no VIN tags until 1955. I have seen a few on the older Chevys. I think when the dealers replaced the motors if needed they made a new VIN tag and placed it on the P***engers side A pillar to show the new motor number. No sure but I have seen a few. Good luck
i have a '33 77 sedan and a vin. tag original they start with 77 and 5 numbers all of my 30's cars have vin. tags and have 7 numbers thats 3 cas
Just checked my '36-77. Has an oval like tag on the outside of the left frame rail, 14 inches from the front body mount. About right in the middle of my sbc headers. Tag is 2-1/4" x 3/4". It also has the typical tag like the ones on my 37-41 cars, but not on cowl...directly behind the opening for the hand brake on the driver side floor. g-willys
