I have a 1940 Chevy coupe with a 350 small block. I have tried twice to install headers on the car. The first time I tried shorty headers...no go then I tried block huggers. No go. I have been looking at the Speedway ram horns and they look like they sit higher and the connector is tucked and out of the way. I have stock old style ram head manifolds on the car now. Do you guy's think the Speedway header will work if the stock header does? The clearance problem I am having is with the steering shaft Idler, it's measures half inche with the stock manifold.

  2. The only block hugger I ever found to fit my '40 Chevy was a set of Pro Car headers about 20 years ago. Speed and Performance in Arkansas has them now. The fit so tight against the block that you have to use an allen plug in the block drain holes. I have MII ifs and two u-joints in the steering.

I bought a pair of the GM 2-1/2" rams horns when GM repopped them a few yers back nd they weren't even close to fitting.

A half inch is as good as a mile.

I have a pair on my 37 Chevy coupe. they tuck in quite a bit but not as much as block huggers.

I would try some old corvette ram horn. Then usually fit almost anything. I've put them in a 32's-40's fords.

I used the Speedway rams on my red roadster, (search- Thanks Wheels of Time Koz), and on the drivers side I cut the flange a bout an inch up and repositioned it to clear my steering. After the welding was done and dressed, it was undetectable. We just did the same thing on a friends coupe with a similar problem. Nothings impossible if you can weld. I do like the Speedy headers as they are nicely finished when they come and did fit well. The stainless ones turn brown, the only drawback.

I'm pretty sure that the Inlet / Outlet relationship is the same as a stock ram's horn header. I've seen them on a '57 and the owner said they just bolted up with stock header pipes.

  8. What about truck rams horns ? The ones that turn slightly towards the rear rather than dumping straight down. Or are you trying to get away from stock type manifolds ?

nhbamndit is right, i have a set in my attic and the dr side does dump out back alittle and curves twards the rear. might fit better. they are off a 70 chevy pu i believe.
not to mention a stock gm part made by proud gm workers in the 70's has to be better then that imported shit everyone is selling, i think they make it from chernobil waste!!
thats my opinion for what it's worth

Sometimes the truck ramshorn can be used on the opposite side so it actually dumps forward, ahead of the steering gear.

I tried Speedways on my avatar and they didn't help my clearance problem so I sent them back and got full credit. I was careful with them while test fitting them and more than once I have made returns and got full credit.

I had heard that truck headers would fit because they exit to the rear Great photo by the way. Here is a pic from the bottom. I hope you guy's can see it.

no I had the same problem manifold was right at the stearing box .
I just cut the flange at the bottom of the manifold at a slight angle .
spun it around and welded it back on .cuts like butter and welds nice .just make sure you cover it up with a welding blanket and cool it down slow .it wont crack .. I will take a pitcure of mine if need be ..:joe

I had mine angle milled where they bolt to the block, tucked them in a little closer, gave me a half inch or so.

I went with these headers, They fit and make a great sound. They look good also. The car makes alot of compression now and the horse power gain is huge. I also replaced the heads with the cast iron summit head with roller rockers. Great comination
