Got this screaming curiosity going on here. When I was a a younger man the real deal for ignition was the Mallory Rev Poll. You used to be able to get everything on a box dizzy and coil/box. OK as I understand it Rev Poll stood for reverse polarity. So here is my question for all you much more better educated than I. Was there any difference in the distributer? Or was it just the direction the current ran through the coil? or am I totally off base? Hey GMC Bubba ya out there somewhere?
Apparently the Rev-Pol and the Double Life are the same basic distributor with a different point and condensor set-up. Here's a thread on the subject. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=111336 I recently scored a NOS Rev-Pol YC 310hp for a sbc. I would like to run this thing, but I'm wondering if there's a Pertronix unit for it.
Don't know about a petronix unit but I know you can go with a unilite for about the same money and they are a better ignition in my opinion. I was thinking perhaps different points and condensor.
Best I can do Pork. I have a "Double Life" in my Merc only has 4 lobes. Points mounting on dizzy plate is exactly 45* apart and gapped @.022". Jim
Beats me how i missed this one yesterday , but i did. from the hamb previous post above: Double-life: 4-lobe cam, two separate sets of points connected together with one condensor. This is wired to a normal coil. The only benefit of this over a normal single point distributor is that the points last longer as each set is only firing 4 times per revolution. Good description ! Rev-pol: 4-lobe cam, two separate sets of points, each with their own condenser and wired to separate primaries on the special Rev-pol coil. This coil has a single secondary terminal that connects to the distributor cap. My guess is that this offers some of the benefits of a dual-coil setup without having to use two coils and a special distributor cap. The special twin primary ignition coil offered the same benifits of the Harmon Collins, du-coil and Grant Flamethrower offered. Twin contacts each operatiog its own primary. This allowed the rpm range to increase as the contacts didnt need to work but half time. A increased faster dwell ( coil build up) also made the sixs (3 lobe) and the eights ( four lobe) increased the available spark at higher rpm. I have one of theses on my gmc powered six Hambster dragster and it runs great. However these coils are very hard to find. But i have a couple new old stock and have yet to see a defective one. A typical unit will cruise at 8,000 plus all day long. ( difficult to do in 1953 !) Hence, if you have a Rev-pol, but can't find the special coil, you can remove the second condenser, wire the points together and run it with a normal coil. Questions ??
The one I had for my 409 also had an under dash mounted switch that by-p***ed the resistor for more voltage on demand.
That one worked for sure. I have been thinking about reproducing the little dash bracket, switch and on/off lamp. Would still work on any and all contact system etc. Look cool with the word "race" on it for sure........
I've got a rev poll box/coil and a tach drive YL. I'm guessing that I'll have to do some mods to make it work together. Let me rephrase my coil says rev poll on it. But it seems like it only has a single primary. I'll have to look a little closer this evening and get back.
Thanks for posting those pics Bubba. That schematic is a big help. That Rev-Pol coil is pretty ugly. I think I'll convert mine to a regular dual point. Any idea about an electronic conversion for these? Pertonix or Mallory?
