Here it is, first fire of my .030 over full race flatty. Still needs some tuning, but runs alright.

That thing sounds great! Wish mine had half of what that things got.
What are the details of the engine build?

its a 54 Plymouth 230 flathead 6. .030 over, line bored and decked. Head was milled down .040 thousands. Its been ported smoothed. Intake is an offy dual carb modified to fit the ford carbs. the cam is a re-ground stocker, with .550 of lift and 236 degrees of duration. it has forged aluminum pistons, and a balaced rotating assembley. Tranny is a powerflight that has been rebuilt, and tightened up 10%

Once you get settled down, sinc the carbs up with tool so the throttle plates are opening same time same distance. then you can deal with the idle. Don;t forget to retorque the head following the correct sequence. And remember when you re adjust you valves, a bit loose is preferable. then put a vacuum gauge on it should be in the 16 to 18 inch level at a slow idle 450 to 500. Once you get a decent idle set the timing by using the vaccum gauge turn the dizzy till you get the highest steady reading. then when you check it with the light it will probably 4 to 6 degrees BTDC which is where ti needs to be with modern "gas".

Sounds pretty good for the first light off.

I am real happy with my 56 dual carbed flatty. I took 40 off the head and 10 off the block, rest is stock except for 30 over. One of my plymouth friends has a 54 with a stock 230 and the power glide and he really likes the way it drives.

Thanks for all the info. That startup was actually using only one carb, because they both have 65 mains, which is enough to run the motor on one. Im trying to find some 47 mains, but the local speed shop only has em to 55.

As for the idle, thats about how its gonna idle. The cam has 110 degree lobe seperation, 236 degrees of duration, and .550 of lift. Now i just gotta finish up the frame and drive it!

That sounds pretty damn radical! Where did you get/have the cam done?

btw, you're making my 230 .030 over, 2 barrel carb, Langdon headers, .050 shaved head, 260 degree .410 lift motor that has yet to fire seem kinda lame. ;)

  12. ...you gotta look at his cam specs, with 236 at 50thou you can forget about 500rpm idle and vacuum...uh...what vacuum...maybe 6 to 8 if your lucky....

    Sounds good though...;)

Thanks man. Delta camshaft in Tacoma WA had the grind. $89 dollars to regrind the cam :p

Hahaha. it'll sound just as wicked, trust me! What kinda pistons are you using? Mine came from egge machine.

They came with a harmonic balencer

  15. nice i'm running a delta in my 1979 460. it's cam grind #214 nothing wild(have to grab the cam card for specs) but way more cam then the stock retarded 10 degrees emssions era stocker grind. Great customer service. when I called them and told them what I was building, parts involved, ect. and what I was shooting for hp wise. this is what they recommended and I have been really happy with it.

  16. Now thats what I'm talking about. Way cool, and it ain't a sbc. I love it.

thank you! When i first tried to get it running, i didnt have the transmission bolted all the way down. Big mistake. Soon as it caught, the entire motor was shaking back and forth 10 inches, and i couldnt hold onto the throttle.

Sounds good. What is your cam overlap? Your valve lift (.550") is a lot. What valve springs are you using. It is a good practice when first starting a reground cam to run the RPM's up to 2,000-2,500 and hold them there for 20 minutes of so.

I am running dual Carter B&B,s on my Desoto flathead 6. If I attempt to run my engine with only one carburetor it will not idle much the same as yours. However my cam is not as lumpy as yours is.

I have found that even with many modifcations my engine is very dependable. I have driven it close to 30,000 miles with no problems. These pictures were taken in Detroit a couple years back. The guy on my right is 46 plym.

Got to admit , when a 19 yr old kid tells me he has a full race motor , I'm goin to be skeptical ....:D

Mind you it sounds the goods ..... should be smoother with both carb's .
    Neat !:)

To be honest with you I never really heard to many flathead 6"s run but GODDAMMIT! that thing sounds evel. Nice job man.

  25. That mill sounds great, congrats. The '55 Dodge 230 in my '39 is punched .060, block decked, Fenton head, Edmunds intake w/2 1bbl Carters, Langdon headers, and an Edgy cam. I have a Mallory dual point dizzy that will go in shortly. It's very tame compared to yours.
