I have a few things I want to have powder coated? A horse shoe oil tank and a sixteen inch wheel and hub. One shop says he can ruff it up with sand paper. The other says they will need to blast it off. Who is right? thanks tim
You can just rough it up,,and use an acrylic enamel,,,or you can powder coat,,,,chrome is pretty tough stuff,,as long as the surface is prepped it'll be ok,,Don't worry,,you wont have to blast anything,,,,unless off course it's rusted to Sh*t,,,
most powder coaters like to sand blast first. many also submerge the part in an acid etch before spraying with powder. my friend that does it will scuff with 80 grit first then acid etch then coat.
I had a set of old chrome fenderwell exit headers powder coated a few years ago and the shop insisted on sand blasting them first. They came out great and the stuff stayed on.
I just called Larry at Vanguard powder coatings,,,They sandblast metals and bead blast aluminum, stainless and chrome.HRP
I have some parts on my Harley that are powdercoated over chrome. The only problems I have had are in the areas that see wear. If the chrome is good & the parts will not see any wear just go for it. If there is a wear issue I would sandblast first. Be careful what kind of sand you use. i have been told not to use silica if things will be powdercoated. Use Al oxide.
At the request of the powder coating guy, I used to take plated parts to the chrome shop and have the plating stripped (very inexpensive) before powdercoating.
