I just got my hands on a Schroeder Sprint car steering box. The box is a 6:1 which is to quick for one hand crusin', but I see on Schroeders web site that they have a Hot rod version that has a reducer built in, to get you to 16:1. I found this gizzmo which is a steerring quickner that stock car/modified guys use to quicken up a stock box. MY QUESTION TO YOU CAT'S IS.....couldn't I just turn this thing around and mount it between the steering wheel and the steering box, and end up with a 16:1 ratio...Or is there something I'm missin here????
That's a good one ,I can't see any reason why you can't. If it's going to break, direction doesn't matter. Ol Deuce
I think the Schroeder ratio changer doubles whatever you have. 8:1 becomes 16:1, your 6:1 would become 12:1. There was guy on here several months ago that made something simular to bolt on the Schroeder but I haven't seen his ad for a while. I have the 8:1 and have chosen to gut it out. Works fine when you are moving.
It'll work but since it's a 2:1, you only get to an effective 12:1 final. That's probably enough for your app-if it's still too sensitive you can go to a short pitman arm..
This may be a little o/t but on my street driven champ car I will be using a '50s Ford pickup truck box, modified for center-steer. It has, I believe an 18:1 ratio that I will fine tune with a pitman and steering arm with multiple holes for quickness changes. That also gives me the ability to use a steering wheel mounted horn ****on.
It will have a support bearing close to the steering wheel, and then the "reducer" installed between the wheel and the steering box. (sounds easy doesn't it...)
I think your right SJ...Speedway has several different styles available. I might see if I can make modifications to one so that it bolts onto the case of the Schroeder. I was hoping that the profile box could have been made into a manual box. Maybe I can nab a junked profile box at the Indy racer sale in January and see if the box can be doctored.
