so i was an idiot and forgot to drain the water out of my motor before this winter and guess what, i now have two fist shaped cracks in the side of my block. yeah it ****s.

so ***uming the heads weren't affected (i haven't checked yet) i was curious if vortec heads would fit on something like an old 283 or 327 or just an older 350, i
d like to get out of this with just having to buy a shortblock so any help would be great. (im kind of a ford guy so i dont know gm interchangability very well).

thanks guys and have a merry christmas

  2. Yea they bolt on just fine.

I might check for valve clearance on a 283 but I don't think it is the same issue as bolting a 350 head on a 283.

Like Pork"n'****** said, they'll bolt right on. Valve clearance, I'm not sure about. Perhaps someone who knows more than me will chime in.

Might have a problem on small bore 283. Need late intake if youre thinking of the iron head.Might want to consider GMs fast burn aluminum vortec. Supports 550 hp outta the box.Killer heads.Takes early and center bolt valve covers. Paint them engine color and no one will know why your small block runs so good.

I put a set on a late 70s 350 and they run great. I used an Edelbrock intake for the Vortec heads.

you will need center bolt valve covers and a different intake manifold but they will bolt right up. ALWAYS check PTV (piston to valve) clearance when doing a head swap.....it would even be smart to check ptv clearance when doing rocker arms, pushrods, or a cam as well. its better to take a little more time than break stuff and spend a bunch of money to fix it

  8. You also need guided rockers, centerbolt valve covers, and a vortec specific intake and bolts.

Stock vortecs have valve guide to retainer issues above .450 lift. Their 1.94 intake valves should clear a 283 bore.

the other day , we had a reman gm motor that came in without the self aligning rockers....figure that, you'd think they would work off the stem.

I think he was saying he already has the heads, and needs to replace the block under them.

gas giant is correct. i have a complete motor (only had break in time but it DID run) i'm just in need of a new shortblock and i'd rather have something cool like a 327 or a 283 in there instead of telling everyone "oh it's a 350".....stupid reason but im sure some can relate.
