Im looking for a 12 volt battery with the following dimensions

    10.25 long (across the top)
    6.5 wide (across the top)
6" high (from bottom to top of case)..or top of poles if possible..Top post style please

i have one right now that is the same in length and width..but its like 7.5 high or maybe even 8" in height.

Standard lead acid..not any of those $$ cha, ching batteries please:D

I know they usually have a group #..im not really sure how they determine that..but dimentionally the lower or shorter in height is what im lookin for

    thanks in advance

notice that the web page I linked to is from 1996, it's possible that there's a newer group size that's smaller? what with all the late model cars getting smaller over the years.

I found that web page in about a quarter of a second using google. suggest you search for bci group size or something and see what's available.

Keep in mind that the smaller the battery, the less power it can store, unless it's made with more exotic stuff, which makes it cost more.

    Thanks Squirrel, I'll do that.
all its gotta do is turn over a mild 350 with a Hi-torque starter.
but i can see that i got to rethink my battery tray placement possibly..height clearence to the floor. was trying to gain an inch with just the battery..not going to happen.
I want something i can pick up off the shelf in any auto store,
not into buying exotic batteries and paying to get screwed on their reliability issues..anything over 80 to 100 bucks for a battery is crazy to me.
would like to be able to pick one up at any local parts house if i have a problem in bum-****ed-egypt

Suggest you go to the auto parts store with a ruler to figure this one out! :)

Get the biggest Harley full dresser battery you can find from Wally World. If your 350 is in good tune and that high torque starter is a gear reduction and you are not trying to start that betty on a frozen day, you should be good to go. ALso maybe carry a set of jumpers until you sort it out. ;)

it doesnt have to be 10.5 long..but the one im using to mock with is..
was hopeful that the length might make up for the lack in height..
i want something off the shelf..not sommething i have to sit in my motel room for 5 days and wait for it to come in in east- be-jeasus. Trying to think forward to the dead battery day, and make it easy on myself

I will just have to adjust the position of the battery box on the frame rail..and make a few gussets to support the weight down low i guess

Im using the KISS method.. or at least trying to:eek:

Just went through my Interstate book, the shortest that they show is 6-7/8. That is a group 42, L 9.5 W 6-7/8 H 6-7/8

Lotsa luck, this is a 2006/7 catalog.

Von Rigg Fink Try New Castle Battery.com They are in New Castle Pa. They carry a lot of custom made batteries . and they pretty much do there own in house mfg. of batteries. A lot of guys around here buy from them for cars with '' different '' size battery boxes. Last I heard they were pretty reasonable. Just another avenue for you to check out. For anyone else reading this and looking for nostalgia original looking batteries with new internals.this is a good place to check. Hope it helps.

According to my catalog for the early Chev V8 they started at 275 CCA. Of course this depends on your power options. A Group 42 (as of '08 price sheet) starts at 450CCA. Unless you are running a lot of compression and/or power equipment it should be plenty. Yes a 42 is a VW battery. But as long as it does it's job, personally, I don't care what it supposed to fit otherwise. All a battery does is hold juice.

    logical to me..
not running alot of stuff, and 450 CCA should do the trick.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

set it up to run what's on the shelf at autozone. You'd only have to reconfigure it once but your going to have to try and find a weirdo battery everytime you need to buy one right?
If you can find a place to stick a semi truck battery it'll have some great ccc and reserve. they cost about $70-$100 bucks, Last about 4-5 years and come with 3/8 studs instead of lead posts and you can make your cables out of welding leads.

It should be easy to borrow and test with a VW battery. If memory is correct a group 42 would fit all VW's from '67 up to at least in the '90's, except diesel. You've GOT to know where one of them is. FWIW, my '70 302 Truck only needs about 350 CCA, so 450 should be plenty.

The 51R is a easy one to get. Common in late model Honda Civic and Accord. Costco is a good source and provide a good warranty.

That is the one that I am planning on using for my Model A with a 425. Don't think I will be driving it in the winter so the capacity should be OK.:D
