OK, Rustybucket in OH got his Edelbrock's slingshots from Speedway on Friday.

It sure looks pretty and, of course, this intake has become of those elusive flathead speed parts in it's original form.

$450 shipped certainly seems a heck of a lot better than the $2K these manifolds were bringing a few months ago. I really don't give two hoots regarding repopp'd or original personally so my question is this.

How does this intake perform? I've read stories that this was the "hot" intake of the pre-war era. Is anyone running one now & can speak of it's peformance?

I certainly would like to own one, but not if it runs like doo-doo.

    Thanks.

I have only heard good things about them.....According to "the book" they work very well....& they do look great also.

They seemed very popular back in the day so if that's any indicator.......

I'm considering buying the Slingshot for my Flathead. I don't know how well it stacks up to other intakes, but you hear a lot about this intake performing very well at the lakes. I think they look really sweet, too.

Also anyone know what was available for air cleaners or "frog mouths" pre-war?

What about the full fendered street cars though? We those Thickstun air cleaners pre or post war?

In other words, what were people running on their slingshots on their '36 Ford Cabriolets? :D

I think the same thing....not alot of pre-war open hood shots of "customs" to use for refrence
alot of them just had the stock single carb with the stock aircleaner I believe...so I always assume the trend in a "hopped up" motor would be the same as for a "hot rod"(roadster) of the time period
For my '35 coupe I'm building to "around" 1945-46... i had planned to run a McCulloch supercharger with a modified stock aircleaner on the single carb... but now I found a pre-war Eddie Meyer intake, so I'm leaning towards a pair of sliced stacks with some sort of screen/filter in the bottom....

I did buy a NEW slingshot as a 3rd option.... just to keep this post on topic :)

  12. Ask NealinCA he is running one. I have an original and it runs great, just the usual troubles of tuning the carbs and keeping them tuned. Definitely not a bottom end intake, they tend to run better at higher RPM, just as you would expect from a tunnel ram type of design.

Rustybucket has his roadster on the road I think? I know the engine is running at least... hopefully he sees this and leans in with his recent experience. :) plus he has a great Av8

Once I got through the fuel system gremlins, my rpu is running great with the Slingshot...

I tried quite a few combinations...progressive linkage, plugged power valves, different power valves, jets, etc...

The engine is 262 ci and I am currently running a pair of 91-99 Lincoln Zephyr "94"s with 4.5 power valves, .048 jets, and straight linkage. I am real happy with the performance.

I have an original Slingshot I got 35 years ago. Just last year I found out its a very early "no-name" version made before the block letter models. I just thought someone ground the name off way back in the day. My thanks to the guys who e mailed me info on this thing. I got it, and some other flathead parts, from a widow lady who's husband ran a racecar just before the war and again briefly with their son after he came back from Korea. I don't know what type of racecar they had. She said she had pictures but in her 80s she couldn't remember where her photo albums were. Wish I could have seen them. Oh, and NO its NOT for sale.

The Slingshot on my rpu is an original also. My dad bought it 30+ years ago at the Long Beach Model T swapmeet. There was a guy with a whole booth full of flathead speed equipment. He had a sign..."Buy any pair of heads...$25, get an intake free". He picked out a nice pair of Weiand heads and my brothers and I picked out the Slingshot. He ran it on his 40 coupe for a while...then I talked him into letting me run it.

  23. Django,

good luck finding the LZ 91-99 carbs. It took me just under 2 years to find my pair. They are a bitch to find in good shape. 39-40Lincoln only, and to make matters worse the 39-40 Lincoln also got Strombergs also, depended on which carb were available on the assembly line. Lincoln was having problems with Stromberg, so they started using the Holleys. 1941 Lincoln was fed up with Stromberg and went exclusively with Holley, Lincoln went so far as to change their intakes to 4 bolt flange so that no Strombergs could be used on them.
