When I first came to work for the phone company, I bought and sold a few O/T low end cars for extra money.
I met a hard working young (early 20's) that worked in the cafeteria in my building.
Real nice guy, always a smile. Seemed to avoid the whole gang hip hop inspired clothing, etc that we see around here... Talked alot about his little boy.
Mentioned he needed a car.... I sold him an isuzu impulse and let him pay me out over a year...
He was VERY appreciative! Always paid on time.
A month after he paid for it, the transmission went out.
A shop quoted him $1100... I tried to help him find a used one, no go!
so he was on foot again.

He asked me if I had any other cars... I had a beat up (but fast) Fiero...
He came over and looked at it and asked me if we could do the same deal as before (pay it out)
I said, No... and he looked dissapointed...
Then I said, "Take it, its yours...." and gave him the title...

From that day on, when ever I saw that young man he would hug me...
Did it once with all his friends standing around at the mall!!!

I got way more joy out of doing that than anything I would have bought with the 600 or 700 that car was worth!!!

That's a cool thing to do. I sold a VW Rabbit Type D for $15(practically giving it away) to a family before.

Over the years I have given (for $1) two good running used cars to close friends who were down on their luck. It made their day.

  5. Not a special car.A buddy of mine owns a junkyard. I store my parts cars there. I gave him my old all wheel drive Caravan to use as a yard car since it would go anywhere. The other day a customer needed an AWD trans so I sent him out there. My buddy sells it for $800.00 to the guy complete then phones me to ask how much of it I wanted. Hell I gave it to you I said...you keep it all. Sure sounded happy over the phone. This time of the year we all need a bit of extra cash....

  6. Not to ruin the good nature of this thread and get o/t but...

I had a buddy that shared a car with his girlfriend and always complained about how hard it was to get around. They were having a hard time making ends meet and couldn't afford another one. For his wedding myself and two other buddies chipped in and bought him a '90-something Bonneville. It had about 160k miles on it and wasn't much to look at but it ran like a top. He drove it once or twice and bitched because there was a little shimmy in the front end at about 40mph. He wanted me to put new struts on it. Keep in mind this guy's drive to work was only about 4 miles of in-city driving, no highway. The bastard ended up leaving the thing to rot in the alley behind his house until the city impounded it as an abandoned vehicle. Ungrateful MF.

    Sorry. Merry Christmas.

I just gave away my work van about a month ago, seeing as how I can't work anymore. It was an Aerostar, not pretty but very solid mechanically. These folks needed a car desperately, husband works two jobs, wife works, so it's not like they're not trying. You would have thought I gave them a Cadillac by the reaction we got:) THAT was an early Christmas gift to ME:D

I gave away a Volvo station to a family that had rented from me for over 10 years. Guy was about to cry when I gave it to him and within 3 months he gave it to his drug adict son and the bastard wrecked it within a week.

A cousin of mine was down on his luck and needed wheels. Had a car givin to me an million mile toyota that needed a home. It ran fine and even the AC worked. Told his dad to tell him to come and see me. He came over looked at the car and said "I got five hundred dollars saved up." I smiled and said, "Your Pop is like brother to me and you are a good person take the car home. Keep yur money for when you need it." He drove it for five years with no breakdowns. This thing had like 300,000 miles on it when I gave it to him. I drove it for two years. He still has it but he other rides now. Glad that he was able to use it and I was glad to be able to help him... Godspeed.

Back in about '86 I had a 1964 2 dr. chevelle wagon as a project car w/ new frontend and dics brakes. It had a cherry body w/ stock interior. No motor or trans. I was storing it at my dad's shop. He was finally moving out of his shop so it was time to move it. I had lost intrest in the project so I put it up for sale for $500.00. A kid offered me $250.00. Said that was all the money he had because his new wife just had a kid. He seemed sincere so I told him I needed it moved immediately. If he'd call a tow truck then and there he could have the wagon. I never seen a kid move so quick in my life. Not a bad deal for just a tow bill. I hope he restored it because I would of ended up making a gasser out of it anyway. To rare a car. I pretty much did the same thing in '72 with a '49 ford woody wagon that was up on a tube axle with a flathead V-8. Had to move it out of the way for a 62 corvette gasser project!!!

Not a car but a car trailer. Thirty some odd years ago I bought an open car trailer from a friend. The trailer gave me many years of great service. But then came the need to upgrade the trailer with a dovetail and fill in the open space between the runners making it a solid floor. I shopped around and found I could have a new trailer built for not much more than having the old trailer upgraded. When the new trailer arrived I put the old one up for sale. A neighborhood kid was just getting into roundy-round racing and asked me how much I wanted for the trailer. I told him $900 and he asked if he could make payments. I thought it over and ask him if he had a sponsor for his racecar. He said not yet so I told him he could have the trailer for free as his first sponsorship. One of the reasons I did it was because he has always been a good neighborhood kid, never causing any trouble and is one of those rare young guys who hates FWD imports and loves old cars.

Never really given a car away, (except for my kids) I have loaned a few out for EXTENDED periods of time though, (more than a year).

But when they did not NEED the car or truck anymore, I EXPECTED it back. Does that make me a bad person?

Gave a running and driving 66 Impala SS in 1985 to some folks who needed a car. Bought It back from them a few years later when they needed money. Gave a 89 Beretta GTU to a young lady that need a car. Gave a 1979 Ford LTD to a young man who needed a car for work. If you give them away they can't complain if something goes wrong.:D

I've loaned out cars before too, once for a year:D with the clear understanding that it was a LOAN, and I expected my car back. Incidentally, that happened to end up being my work van that I gave away!

Well... I didn't exactly give it away but...

I met this super nice kid (early 20's) and he ended up helping me finish up a 1960 El Camino. In return I gave him my 1964 Chevy C10. He cleaned the C10 up and painted it and it looks great. Now I have a 1960 2-door Bel Air I want to do, and I plan to offer him the same deal... help me on my Bel Air and I will give him my other 1960 El Camino. Works out good for both of us. I sold the first 1960 El Camino in 2008, and I plan to make the 1960 Bel Air my daily beater. This basically gets 4 cars out of my backyard, so the wife's happy too!!

allengator...That's nice. Seriously, really nice. It's just the best when you do something like that for someone, and they show obivious, unrestrained appreciation. Best feeling in the world. I really enjoyed reading that. The same to the rest of you guys who have done the same. As many say here...PROPS to ya!

Just gave away a 1947 Packard Clipper, complete car, to the manager of the local autozone, he wants to use the engine and trans to build himself his first hotrod. He was supposed to come pick it up Saturday, but with the rain of today I don't think we'll be pulling it out anytime soon.

Just this week I gave a 1985 Dodge Ramcharger to one family and a 1994 Mercury Sable station wagon to another couple.I get a number of free cars a year when I'm doing property cleanups and if they run and have clear titles I give them to those who can use them. All are Midwest rusty and might have minor issues but they get folks mobile.Only have 2 rules which are no alkies or drug users and the new owners pay for title transfer with me in attendance.Isnt hard to find truly deserving folks who just need a break.

Back in the 60's a friend and myself were running around collecting up all the 40 Fords we could find. We had 15+ of them but most were his. We collected the best parts we could find for our dream build. I can remember we drove one coupe off in a near by canyon. Hum, may be I better go take a look again. My buddy’s brother lived in So Cal and heard we had a 39 convertible. He asked and we both agreed it was his to come and get. Damn, I could use that now. I still keep in touch with the buddy and his brother. I have given away more parts than I can think of. My policy is; if they can use it, it’s yours but if you are building to sell the project or parts they are $1 mil each. Made a lot of friends that way and have a few on my other list. And no I don’t have any 40 parts left. :D

I gave a '74 Caddy to Goodwill one year. Not really giving I guess. I was still working then with a better than average income so I got a nice tax deduction. Gave my grandson a '66 GMC short bed , 350/350 pickup 5 years ago. He still has it. It was my daily driver until I moved to AZ. Gave a Model A sedan body to a friend about 10 years ago.

OH and an old farmer gave me a '32 Ford 4-door. We cut the frame out of it for a friends roadster and cut up the rest of it and dumped it in a gully. I'm probably going to Hell for that one.

  27. Gave away a Vega wagon. It was given to me to sell, and I had a car in abody shop at the time. Owner saw it and wanted it for his daughter to drive. So I passed it on. BUT THE DAMN THING CAME BACK!!!! He put a fuel pump in it but didn't get it running-bad ground. I fixed it, and it ran well. SO I put it up for sale again. SOld it to a guy with TWO v12 Mercedes, a Cobra, a Daytona coupe, A Willys gasser, a 58 Vette, and a 66 Biscayne with an aluminum head 427. I said to him, when ya gonna drop the big block in it...But he wanted to drive it as is!!!

The Prodigal Vega....I wonder when it might reappear...Wish I kept a pic
