Most dual master cylinders are a two bold connection. I'm sure you could make a flat plate adaptor extremely easy to hook up to that three bolt bracket.

Glad to hear you made it out of that one alright.

  3. Glad to hear you're alright Nads. I have been in the situation before and like someone putting a gun to your head. You think of whatever comes to your head first.

  4. Well it,s allways good to get out of a situation like that in one piece. Them danged HotRods are dangerous.
Henry Ford knew what he was doing with them new fangled 4 wheel mechanical brakes. They will never let you down.

Nads, I am dissapointed that you only have one braking system! That is just plain stupid.

Ok, that was ugly, but someone's got to say it.

I am just glad that you are ok. Thank the Lord for giving you fast reflexes. Some people just freak when that stuff happens and sometimes they die.

I did that crap several years ago. The rear drum only trike lost its brakes and I new I was gonna die. I won't test drive a vehicle without 2 braking systems. If it is only one cylinder, I at least want some lever manual brake flap (like a go cart) - or something...

Most people probably know to swerve back and forth to slow a runaway car, but I am saying it just in case. Kind of like skiers swoosh down a mountain.

Mailboxes help slow you down too, but you never know when one might be concreted 3 feet deep into the ground so be ready for impact if you have to go that route to stop.

Some of you probably don't have the luxury of using mailboxes because you are in a roadster or something... damm.

  6. nads,

I just bought a mustang master cylinder for 67-72, they have two types..the drum/drum has same sized ports....the disc/drum has a larger front port.

dunno if that helps or not.

MAn that sucks glad to see you and the carare alright. I quess I better order me a floor mount emergency brake. I had a situation like this that happened to be but it was because the rod that goes from your pedal to the master cylinder broke in half. Talk about shit your pants. Always remember you can always throw it in park but you better hang on to her. Luckily for me to nowbody was coming up to the intersection. I was about a 1/4 mile from getting onto the highway. Anyway glad all is well.

i lost my brakes on my 68 sport fury once,,, my fault.. i was getting pedal fade for a bit,,, made no attempt to correct the problem"master cyl" goosed it going into a gas station,,,, went for the brake, pedal hit the floor,,, went for e brake pedal, missed,,, went for park, only got reverse,,,, right through the wall,,, hit the big drink cooler,,, knocked the first 3 rows worth of drinks everywhere,,, luckily there used to be a garage door there and it was only plywood and framing,,, the car survived needless to say so did i,,,, but i dont neglect my brakes anymore,,, glad to see everything worked out on your end,,,

Being that I'm relatively new to this old car stuff, do any of you have any informative websites that mention easy bolt up or cross references to dual cylinders for particular cars?

I have found aftermarket kits for my '54 ford, but the people want over 500 dollars for the kit.

If there was a cheaper (yet still safe) way to use other car parts, I'd be happy to hear them.

I don't have a booster or anything, so I can't believe that 500 dollars is a good deal for something like this.

BTW, this car's been on the road almost 3 years with no brake problems at all.

Emergency brakes are like medical insurance or crash helmets: you only need them when you NEED them.

sometimes you just have to go to the junk yard and find one that works.i did this for a 56 plymouth i had ,after i lost brakes on it ,luckily the e brake worked,i went to the pick a part and looked for a dual drum/drum master with the same bolt pattern as the old one on the firewall, got one from a 70 dart, also got the proportioning valve from the dart, took it home fitted it.then went out and got a NEW not a rebuilt, master,.ran new lines, and adjusted the pedal rod a bit and worked great.just look at all the cars that are similar weight and size to yours, that came with dual masters .but i strongly recommend to get a NEW not a rebuilt one, they cost more but are worth every penny,i've had problems with rebuilt ones before, not fun!just my 2 cents!

Oh yeah and if you throw a C4 into park, it ain't stoppin' speakin from experience. I was in the Air Force and I was on base going to work one morning on my 50 Ford and I was coming up to a light. I hit the pedal and heard a loud bang, then the pedal went to the floor. Still going 45, I had a gas station on the left, red light in front and a wooded area to my right, so I chose the wooded area ( who wouldn't), dodged trees and shut it off, then drove in a circle till it stopped.

I tell you there is nothing like the feeling you get when you cant stop a 2000 lb machine you are inside of.

Also had no e-brake, cause when i put the maverick rear in I never hooked it up, I was so anxious to drive it I said "i'll get to it later". Later never came and I never thought of it till that faithfull day. After that I put a hanging pedal and dual master cylinder from a 67' Mustang in.

Oh the transmission just made a loud grinding noise, but it was okay amazingly! Turns out something had come loose in the drum and ripped EVERYTHING out including the brake line. When I took the drum off all that was left was shrapnel that fell out on the ground.

To Mike's 51. Yes, it will slow down by turning off the ignition. You still have compression. The engine is still drawing in the air/fuel mixture and compressing it, you're just not firing it anymore. The compression, friction of engine, trans, and rearend also help slow things down a little. But brakes are still better!

Briggs and stratton, here's the car in question.

I fixed the car last night at Mike's place, I rerouted the brake line to the back of the axle and welded the tee anchor in a much better place.

I looked at the space issue under the floor, and I've got plenty of room to mount any manual brake cylinder.

The battery tipping over is absolutely unpardonable. I had just put in a 00 guage starter cable that I got for $2 and it's a little shorter than the old one, so the battery was just sitting on the floor. That's pretty pathetic of me.

I guess I've got some stuff to do to get things right.

Nads....about 10 years back..I took my first long distance run back to my home town in my just competed 34 3 window..about a 5 hr. drive......mostly interstate all the way.....as I approached my home town there was road construction on the secondary hwy.I was following a Mack dump truck with a full load of gravel.....and yep, I was too close to his ass.He lit upon his binders and I jumped on mine......My pedal went straight south and did not return.I could not swerve to the shoulder cause there was none! They were installing sewer culverts and it was nothing but a 12 foot ditch.I pulled into the oncoming lane and THANK-GOD there was nothing heading towards me....Hit the E-brake hard and pulled to a dead stop.(In the oncoming lane .)
After I got to my folks house and changed my shit-covered trousers...I discovered that all the brake line fittings were seeping fluid. It turned out the fella who flared all my lines used the wrong degree of flare!....
    ....anyways...thank god for a good-working E-brake.

  25. [IMG] Years ago,,,probably 1979,,,I was Driving a Rover TC 2000 from Vancouver B.C. to Seattle for Thanksgiving, anyhow on the way back going towards the eye5 i hit the brakes and the pedal went clear through to the floor,,,This is in the middle of rush hour,,,an if youv'e driven the eye5 north from seattle you know what a mess the traffic is,,,the only brake i had was the emergency brake,,,I drove all the way back to the Canadian border on it,,The Rovers used inboard disc brakes with a cable to cam actuator on the inboard callipers, so the braking was really good( even if it was only the rears ) I can tell you about cold clammy sweats,,,stop and go all the way to the border and back to Richmond B.C.,,,i was young,,only married for a year,,and really broke, so it had to be done,,anyhow,,,it turns out that the rear seal in the master cylinder was shot,,so the Vaccume from the power booster had sucked out all the brake fluid,( it was a dual circuit too ) but i gotta say this,,the best rear brake setup i've ever come across,,,Angels where looking after me that day,,and a set of inboard disc brakes [IMG] Glad to hear you made it back to the barn ok Nads,, [IMG] Oh yeah,,,just a quick note,,,i've never heard of a rover differential ever biting the dust,,may be worth considering for your Rod.
