If he is indeed a farmer, I'd go with the line "OK, what'll be? Your daughter or the old car out back?"

I stopped by an old house to look at a 56 Ford truck sitting in a lean to and knocked on the door. A rough looking older guy came to the door. I asked him about the 56, he cursed me profusely for bothering him about the truck and said he was tired of people stopping. He claimed the 56 was just a parts truck for the 56 he is restoring and it "ain't fer sale". He did relent a bit after I begged forgiveness and showed me the 56 he was working on.

That was 5 years ago, the 56 is now a nicely restored runner. The older guy (Karl) and I are friends, and hang out at events. I helped find a few parts as he has no computer and he has helped me score a few parts thru his network of old timers. I didn't buy the truck but made a cool friend.

I guess the best thing is to knock on the door, be nice and treat people with the respect they deserve. O yeah, and watch out for the dogs.

Wow, around here an original 32 coupe, unchopped and unmolested is worth WAY WAY more than that. We had one in the shop a while ago that sold for close to $200k. Getting one for $13k boggles my mind.

    You will have to speak his language;
just tell him you noticed the old tin in the moon light last night when you stopped in for your weekly visit to the sheep.

I usually bring a kid with me and tell the guy I want to restore it with the kid to teach him the value of hard work. Farmers get that and it has worked for me. I don't have kids, but borrow them from friends and do work on the cars with them.
I told one old guy if he sold me the car I would cherish it and own it until the day I died. He told me that was exactly what he was going to do. oops, no sale. I ended up buying it from his wife a few months later after he p***ed away.

    Good luck

There's probably a thread going on on some farmer's forum right now, "How can I get the most money out of some jerk that doesn't think I know what all these old cars are worth?"

Bruce Lancaster hit is exactly right. Get a female, wife, girlfriend, co-worker, to dress in normal clothing for the area and have her do a bit of sweet talk. The "I want to get my husband a car so he'll stay home while I take care of my very sickly and very elderly mother". And give her cash. No more than the most you'd pay for the car. Worked for me three times in my life.
    Good luck!!

Farmer stereotypes. Thats funny. Thats kinda like those ratty 'ol punk hot-rodder stereotypes. Thats ok, I'm not offended. I fit in both and love 'em both.

As far as for the farmer. Trust me here ... take the money that you would give for that car and buy either an antique tractor or modern piece of make-life-easy farming equipment and offer to do some trading. Works for me.

my dad still has the old farm,at 89 years old and has all of his farm tractors............even though i have has no interest in the tractor stuff the tractor collectors sure do..........and i watch how they try to handle him..........usually they piss him off...........because the collecter is in a hugh hurry and no time for small talk
anyway at that age he has alot to say about everything.......so if you want to buy some of his old stuff..........it may take a while because at that age decisions are made slowly

1.listen.........to what he has to say and the boring stories
2.don't let him forget you........send xmas cards ,stuff like that
    3. if you are looking to flip the stuff for money you just counted your self out of the running.............if the old farmer catches on

i get calls form stuff i wanted sometimes years later...........the timing may be off ...........but atleast they remembered me
    good luck

  21. The 32' was a 3 window to! These are a couple cars I'm working on now. The 1955 Dodge Sierra 4 dr wagon was parked in a barn in 1966 never driven since. 52,000 original miles. The farmers dad bought it new. This thing is in such nice shape, even the paint is nice under the dirt. The interior doesnt even smell like mice! And in excellent condition! Has fender skirts behind the back seat. The Cushman scooter was last riden in 1962 and is in awsome shape! I think I can get the 55' for between $500-$1000 and the scooter for a few hundred? A few years ago I bought a 53' Ford convertible, 58' Olds 88, (2) 53' desotos, 59' Ford Galaxy, 57' Desoto, 59 NewYorker from this guy for $25 each! The 58' Olds was parked in the building in 62' and was pushed outside a few years ago because a tornado took half the building down. This car was in such nice shape, it was silver with a white leather interior, all we did was take some simple green after the interior and it was like new! We made some good money on that car, it went to Sweden along with 6 other cars! This farmer also has a 46' Plymouth coupe in the same building next to the 55' wagon and that has 34,000 original miles. Also a low mile 51' Studebaker. 26' Dodge pickup, 70' dodge demon 340 4 speed car with 29,000 original miles on it! You would have to bring an extra pair of boxers with if you seen all the stuff this guy has! He takes us in the ba*****t of the old farm house, he has boxes, yes I said boxes! of 1932 North Dakota license plates! brand new in the original D.O.T. envelopes! Were walking the farm yard and we walk over some barn sides that had fallen over, they took 32' license plates and nailed them on for siding! Must have been hundreds of them! Crazy **** like that all over the place! So yea you can get lucky and pickup farm cars for little or nothing, you just dont know until you try!

I find much of the aforementioned ******** scams offensive. Dishonesty is dishonesty even if it's just a little white lie or an "angle". Be yourself, be honest, be polite, and be prepared to pay what the item is worth.

  24. A few years ago (1994) I spotted a nice very clean total stock 1949 Ford v-8 coupe in a doctors office parking lot. I went back and waited for sometime but no one ever came out, so I left a note on the windshiel that said I would be interested in buying the car if they ever wanted to sell it. One year later a little old lady called and said she wanted to sell it and was I still interested. I said sure, how mush was she looking for. $1,500.00 later on the following sat morning I picked it up from her garage and drove it to a local car show that day and took home a trophy.
Also I have come across several old cars just sitting and have asked if I could take a couple of photos for my s****book and had no problem getting to know the owner then and even if they might be interested in selling. But...always ask before even looking!!

  25. Agreed .....
If you don't know how to ask for what you want in life ...
You have missed out on far too much already

    Here's my story...
I've been working on a local who has several old cars/trucks.
About five years ago I started by asking him about a truck he has parked, been in the same spot for over twenty years. He told me that it wasn't for sale and that his son was going to 'restore' it.
A couple of times a year I would run into him, and always brought up the old truck. Had many conversations about farming, sheep, coyotes, old age, hard work and so on. I always took the time to listen, with interest.
I've even helped him a couple of times moving stuff around his yard, a year ago, the truck was gone. Then I find out that he had moved it and built a fence around it to hide it from the bylaw enforcement types.
Christmas eve, I run into him at a local hardware store and he asks me if I'm still interested in the old truck. Turns out that he has sold the farm to developers and will be moving out by March.
Tells me to come over and pick up the truck (52 Chev) which he bought new, even found me the original bill of sale.
I also get, if I want, a 54 Chev car and a (OT) 74 Vette.
Turns out his son has no interest and he just doesn't want to see them get crushed.
And the best part....they're free....just give me a hand moving them, is all he said.
Sometimes, patience is all that is needed.
I'll post some pictures once I get them moved.
