I'm just bought the start to a modified roadster, acctually it a complete car, but the plans for it are a modified style roadster. I'm here in the service and don't know alot about State Laws. A buddy of mine thats from Texas told me that all cars in the state of Texas require a hood. Any help would be great thanks
You need headlights, hi /low, tail lights , brakelights horn emergancy brake and a winshield wipers....But they also say you have to have fenders on open wheeled cars that no ine seems to enforce ( yea us ) and they say you have to have a windshield wiper but you don't need a windshield. I think you should just build it with the basics and let the law catch up to you with what you did wrong. ( most have no idea )
No,not true, You have to "be" a Hood, to drive a car without a hood. Hope this clears that up for you.
This may not help much but: I don't know what the letter of the law is but I too have seen many guys running hoodless rods over the years. But for all I know, they throw a hood on it, get it inspected and then take it back off. I've never actually known anyone to get pulled over or rousted for the hood thing.

We have to have an inspection to get tags the first time, then every year. So unless you have a friend or know an inspection station that is lax, you aren't going to drive it without inspection/complying. Antique tags are for occasional use only, like parades or club gatherings. Not intended for regular use, although most people get away with it, I don't think I could convince the cops in this small town that I was going to a club meeting every day.
[ QUOTE ] So unless you have a friend or know an inspection station that is lax, you aren't going to drive it without inspection/complying. [/ QUOTE ] There is not a single reason not to comply with every single thing on a safety inspection. Everything tested (for the most part) is something you should have on your car regardless. That said....I hear there's a scruffy lookin fidgiting guy who works at a Jiffy Lube in Denton that will give you a break...
I noticed on an older Texas tile that they used to be required to be NOTARIZED...is that still the case or not? also is there a place for miles nowadays and if so are older cars exempt and is there a cutoff year for miles?
Like I said I'm somewhat new here, and whats being done is not always what jonny law says is ok, I have no intent of running it with a hood, just wondering if I need to bend a makshift hood to get plates on it.
If you register it as a 26 or 27 or whatever you only have to have what was required the year of manufacture. No turnsignals, no seatbelts, etc.
Acctually I am at Ft. Hood, dpom me a line sometime, fill me in on the local haunts. Oh and by the way its a 23 studebaker, just in case anyone cares. I sold my gasser for financial reasons but this thing was too bitchin to pass up.

Not required to be notarized, changed quite a few years ago. They trust us!! I have always just checked exempt on older stuff.
It's already been touched on here, but the best deal is to register as 'Antique'. Registration is only once per fixed 5-yr period and no safety inspection required. Antiques are limited to non-commercial 'public interest' use (parades, shows, meets, etc.) but the definition of a 'show' is pretty flexible. I've never had any problems with my '29 hi-boy (hoodless) or the '62 Buick, and I've never actually heard horror stories from others, either. Go 'Antique'.

Theres also the "If your car wasnt built with it .... its not required" side............... My "Safety" inspection..(1960 and older) .... was just HeadLights, horn, taillights, and wipers.... that was it! $12.50!!!!!!!
The antique plates have worked well for me. Cant beat the insurance rate either. I only drive my rod when Im going to shows or club gatherings. I inducted the guy in the next cubicle into the Barons, works really well. Im not sure what the hell his name is, but it works well.
I've been driving with antique plates for 3 years now. Drive it every day, and everywhere. Been to Iowa, Colorado and New Mexico in it. Never even questioned about it.

[/ QUOTE ] They don't require the notorization but some of those old titles needed signed in 2 places, front and back.
[ QUOTE ] Cant beat the insurance rate either. [/ QUOTE ] Crease, which insurance do you go through and is it full coverage?
I've searched everywhere I can think of in the Transportation code, and haven't seen anywhere that shows a hood or fenders being required. Also, the law for window tint changed this year. It used to be that a vehicle built before 1988, was exempt from window tint rules and anything after 1988 could have a a minimum of 35% light transmission. Now, all vehicles may have a minimum light transmission of 25% and the 1988 rule has been removed.
