I have been looking for a 4 wheel drive truck and found this. Its a dodge 1 ton? military truck, every thing is there but the front diff. I need to talk to the owner again to find out where the parts truck is, Let me know what you think. I will get better pics when i get it on the trailer.
It might be hard to find a replacement front axle for that, at this point. It would be pretty easy to get a set of modern 1-ton axles. The swap would be pretty easy. You'd get a common wheel bolt pattern, modern wheels, and some front disc brakes in the process too. Nice score!
gimpyshotrods thanks for the reply, if I don't find the front diff I will update with 3/4 ton axles. for that matter 1/2 ton would do the trick. The best part of this is I think I can get it for s**** price.
I think those are referred to as WC series trucks. I would definitely update the diffs, as they go very slow on stock stuff. Alot of the regular Dodge truck stuff of the same age interchanges.
desertratrodder thanks.what does WC stand for? slow yes the plaque on the dash said top speed in gear is 1st 9mph 2nd 18 mph 3rd 38 mph 4th 55 mph
slicknapier thanks for that link it will help alot chevyshack I think it will look good and also get the 4x4 that I need it the winter
Boyce equipment in Ogden, Utah would have the dif for ya. Use to get parts for my duece and half axles from them. They probably have what you need.
There's another military surplus place in Memphis that may have parts, although I think they deal mainly with 6x6 trucks: http://www.memphisequipment.com/
Thanks everyone for the links, The guy that has it said that there is a parts pu by the creek but I didn't get a chance to look. Hopefully it has a diff. Either that or upgrade to newer.
The motor is probably Continental 6cyl, common parts, not high revving but with will pull a house down the road. If you do swap the axles & springs - keep all original stuff. Military collectors would love this if you want to get rid of it.
Hey. I think thats the same truck stacy did on the tv show GEARS. He called it sgt. Rock. If i remember right he said they only made the military vehicle one year in 1941. Google it and check it out. Its pretty wild.
looks like a rare WWll Dodge pick-up...the data plate - if it's there on the dash/glovebox - should have a build date...my be worth more to turn it to a WWll collector...and make some spending money...that's what I've been doing with the WWll...later stuff just doesnt get much respect...or money...
You might want to re-think it a little. Those trucks are worth big bucks to the military re-inactor guys. It could fund the next project if it were left totally stock. I think they are way cool. Either way it's your deal, but make sure you check things out before you tear it apart. Good luck, Gary
i grew up with those trucks, might get 55 down hill w/a tailwind. it is worth quite a bit stock,if its pretty much all there don't cut it up. it should have a spitfire dodge engine.
Those things are all over Ebay and that's some nice tin, I'd fix it. They had a tendency to break the long side of the front axle. The front and rear differentials are the same the front one is just installed up side down and I think the WCs had a one speed transfer case.
the good thing about that one is that it has a metal cab, the M37 or whatever had a cloth top I was ***igned one in Nam and was a little tough on it, it would run 80 MPH but the engine got the mopar tinkel on the rods a lot of metal to spin on those diffrentials, for real driving a update of some lighter differentials would be good for the roadability does it got a ***le? that seems to be a problem with ex military trucks proabbly did not need much for tags on a Mt ranch
thanks for all the replies. First off I am not going to cut this one up, I just want to get it to go and stop. The most that will get done now is get a diff. under the front. As far as the ***le I have not asked about I just asked to go look at it. From what I have been told it's not that hard to get a ***le, but I will find out. I really like the look of this truck and just plan on cleaning it up and leave it as is. thanks again
If you ever get over to Big Fork - check with man that owns the Standard staion at the hotel there - He hab a personel carrier that has not run since the early 80s - He may still have the front axle from that - Former Montana boy ja**
For a Dodge 4x4, that has some seriously straight tin! Check in with the Dodge Power Wagon Forums for help in finding a replacement axle. For Comparison: http://www.dodgepowerwagon.com/cl***ifieds/ferrie-120409-41wc.php
I have always loved these trucks. I stumbled upon one in the woods when I was a kid. I thought it was just totally *****in. Screams testosterone. Build it to your liking and have fun.
Check out www.vintagepowerwagons.com has everything you need for that truck. They are located in Iowa. Check the DPW link, as mentioned above. Parts are much more common than you think. That truck (and variants) were built all the way from 1940 through the 1968 model year (for the US market) and through the 1972 model year (export). The engine in that would be a 254 ci Dodge flathead Six, used all the way through 1972. Chrysler did NOT use Continental engines. There is no need to swap to a "modern" axle set-up, as the stock units were practically bulietproof. Parts are readily available, as are disc brake conversion kits for front AND rear. Don't make it more "reliable" with a damn SBC, either! That Dodge flathead is more than capable of anything you want to dish out to it. I know of a essentially stock rig like yours that has a Gear Vendors O/D unit in it, and it makes the truck more than capable of sustained 65-70 mph highway speeds, as opposed to the 55 mph that a stock rig attains.
Thanks for the replies, The sgt. rock is not my cup of tea. SBC hell NO. Thanks for the links I have found alot of good reading, gotta love the HAMB
