I have never had real luck with WICOs. They seem fine for tractors and stationary engines

First you must also reduce the spark plugs gap to .018 or so. Big gaps play hell with the coil in your mag. Checking your mag with a even a 1/2 inch spark to ground might just damage the mag without you knowing it.

I prefer Vertex and since they were made prewar they are 'period correct'

As to timing ....... no mag I have found has what you can reallty call a 'curve' it is possible to change plates andd get more or less total timing.

Best solution I have found is to made the adjustible with two mounting clamps and a cable. Cable is easy to get

This way you can pull and retard timing and push to advance as needed

I would also suggest the it's easier to install a kill button rather than mess with the key

It is always better t spin the motor then start the mag..... much easier on your starter motor

Last is an ebay tip. There have been a ton of VW Military engines sold in the last few years. Those that brought sell the mag from these cheap. Ihese are good for you guys. So if you look around you'll get a quality mag cheap enough to have a new hi output coil, timing plates fitted and adapt to your banger

Happy New Year (1929 sould be the best yet)

    My two Groszy.

  2. A few years back I bought a Wico X at the Riverside swap meet for $75. I thought I really got a good deal. When I was cleaning it up I found the base casting was broken and was held together by the timing foot. I paid something like $75 for another base that had to be modified to work.
Met an "oldtimer" at the LA roadster show in the late 90's that said he had used a Wico on a Cragar at the drags with the impulse removed and had a manuel advance using a universal choke cable in the dash. He also spoke of cranking the engine and then turning the mag on to start.

    VW'S???????

You think I KNOW VW's?????? Who said anything about stock VW stuff?

The mag will fire how ever you plug the wires in :)

Honest I know very little about VWs

Vdubs were built in Poland, right? Actually, Crazydaddyo is right. Later in the 60's number three cylinder was retarded 3 degrees because it overheated. I THINK in the 50's the cylinders were all 90 apart.

Usually about the first day of the month or so, someone just up and starts the meeting. Were all pretty basic around here.

Ah, but not for the V8 crowd! Abandon the Model-A adapter and go for the V8 adapter for the Jeep! :D

1st of jan how ya duin
He he got the jump on ya here in New Zealand it is already the first of jan happy new year every one. I think with the dec record posts that the world of bangers is going from strength to strength great what a varied group we are in ages ability and location also great this adds to the strength of this site sharing of ideas and experience and having FUN with our cars this brings me to the point how about we elect here on site members we consider masters people we recognise as having superior knowledge who can mentor us not to put them on the spot but who we know have sound judgement some on this site stand out those who have been there done that and not just read some book about it mark their user name with something like a star which is not only our recognition of them but is also letting us know that this is someone with experience giving their OPINION note caps would be quite an honour to be elected like this what do you guys think?
