I asked a question over on cadillacpower.com about moving the A/C compressor on my Cadillac 500 to the p***enger side of the engine instead of right on top of the intake manifold. I was advised to look into the setup that the 60-65 Buick's used with their A/C compressor and it looks like I could make a few brackets to make it work. I will be using a Sanden SD-805 model compressor and im not sure on how the Buick brackets look from behind the compressor. Does the bracket on the rear of the A/C compressor bolt to the header/manifold bolts? I googled the engines for pics but I couldnt find anything worth using. Any of you guys have any pics of your Buick engines I could use for a reference for making some brackets? I would really appreciate it. Here is a pic I found of the front of the Cadillac 500 (not mine). The pully to bottom p***enger side is where the factory smog pump is orginally located at. The bracket area right above it is where the alternator is. I was thinking of moving the alternator in the area where the factory smog pump was and then moving the A/C compressor to where the alternator orignally was on the p***enger side and moving it out a few inches to clear the valve cover. I will be running power steering so the driver side of the block is pretty much taken up.
I just plated my alt bkt on 63 riv so i had this apart on buick 401 a week ago the front bkt is mounted on top of the alternator bracket, just 2 tabs going up w holes for the old GM compressor the front bracket is hooked to the water outlet and one bolt to waterpump and one head bolt oh and one to block down by fuel pump the rear bracket went to the intake manifold one bolt and i think the bottom one went to a double nuted type headbolt[hope I tightened it] it was not under a headbolt i know that
you cant even see most of the parts when installed inthe car there is not much room, and I had a hard time taking it apart, but went back together easily
I have been collecting nailhead photos because I'm putting one in a 40 Ford pickup project. Hope these may help. Some even have been using the Sanyo system.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
Here is a mount I built for my 40 coupe. It bolts to the front of the head and I added a serpentine belt tensioner to it. I refused to pay the $1500+ for a March system and built this one for about $150. I also had to use a reverse rotation water pump and machine the groves out of the pump pully. All works great!
On my '64 Electra w/401, the area your talking about would be really hard to photograph so that you could see the brackets (see photo). The front bracket is a monster that also holds the alternator underneath. I would be very surprised if this would be of any use on your Cad. motor. Alan Grove makes a very nice and simple universal bracket for the Sanden comps. and it may wind up being less work to start with that and fab. the rest yourself. http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/Universal.htm Also, you may want to call Old air products (TX) and see if they've added a Cad bracket to the catalog (they like using those compressors on everything) I like dealing with them for hoses and other ac stuff too.
Here is a pic of the Nail in my 65 Riv with the A/C compressor removed. I have some more shots of teh brackets if this is what you are looking for, just need to resize. Please disregard the lovely shade of FoMoCo blue the previous owner painted the motor.
Front bracket. 64 Buick oddfire V6 with AC. Same as the 300V8 I think. Seems like there was a cast aluminum piece beneath that carried the long pivot bolts for both alternator and AC. Am thinking it was a very engine specific piece. Can't seem find pictures of it, although I think you see an edge of it beneath the front of the alternator in the first picture. IIRC, it got its rigidity from mounting to the front of the block.
You guys are great! Thanks so much for all the pics, I should be able to get an idea of how to make some brackets for mine now. Thanks once again I really appreciate it.
