Has anyone here successfully welded pot metal? We are going to narrow a 52 Chevy dash and that will mean we will have to remove a few bars from the center. Looking for the best/correct way to put the grill piece back together and allow rechroming. Thanks
IIRC, Polisher used to recommend Silver Solder for Die Cast repairs. Definitely practice on something else first, Zinc doesn't have much of a working window.
Tim Check this product out. I have not used it but it might help you out. http://www.muggyweld.com/potmetal.html
Take the pieces out that need it and line every thing back to where you want it welded...send it to Pauls Chrome in Pa.He can weld and chrome it....expensive,yes but he is the best.....
It is very unforgiving. It has a very low melting point and even solder can be tricky, DON'T use a torch.
If you have never done it, your best to practice on something you can throw away after you destroy it. I had to learn in college, its like working with ****er only you cant get the shape back after it melts away.
Consider not cutting the insert? Cut the surrounding sheetmetal out, section the dash, recut the opening, and weld the surrounding metal back in? Or...section the dash on each side of the insert?
It can be done , it is best to use some of the s****s as filler, or there is rod for it but it is pricy...and as said above practice on something you don't care about first...I do my pot metal with a TIG , but I have seen an old timer do it with O/A torch....I wouldnt even attempt a torch...Shawn
I've used the Eastwood welding rods for pot metal and it worked pretty well. Takes a little practice and patients. It's sort off like welding crayons together, goes from a solid to a liquid quickly.
Pot metal Bezel to steel fender - use body epoxy instead of welding. Strong stuff. Doing my 54 Ford next week.
