hello there ppl i have a 726 carrier its a s spring posi but it is a 2 series carrier it had 2:42 's on it and i would like to run 4:56's i have a set of 4:56's for a 3 series carrier could i run a ring gear spacer , or is there a thicker ring gear that is for the 2 series carrier , thanks for your help
You can get a ring gear spacer or thicker gears. You have gears so a spacer would be cheapest. I think about $40 for spacer w bolts. Check anyone that sells mr.gasket stuff
There is no 4:56 ring gear thick enough for a series two carrier to my knowledge. I tried to do the same thing with a 12 bolt a few years back, use a spacer and a thick ring gear and it just didn't work out. At the least, get a series three carrier then use your thick gear. You'll be pulling on the ring gear properly instead of trying to make it hang on the bolts. With a series three, you'll be open to many more choices in ratios. Been there and done that on this one.
I agree, those spacers are a cheapie band-aid fix that won't hold up to real power. Big blocks bust 'em easily. I have one in a '55 rear that has held up behind a 283, but now I'm going to a 350 I have some doubts.
If it's an 8.5" ten bolt then there are only 2 carriers for it . 2 series 410409 2:42 down 3 series 410408 2:56 up I am not an advocate of spacers , but I have seen them used and hold up , I even saw 2 pacers stacked up in a 12 bolt behind a Poncho . Seting the gears up properly probaly has more to do with it than the spacer . premium bolts , proper torque values and thread lock .
i just like to say im in the finishing stages of installing new internalls in a 10 bolt posi am awaitng halfshaft seals to finish(axleseals to you guys)and what a mothers ***** of a job it was..........so just be carefull and double check all your gaps n settings.
