What to do when its -26 degrees outside

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by vetteracer, Jan 2, 2010.

  1. No wonder North Dakota lost its br*** monkey population.

A comparatively balmy 0 degrees farenheit here in Chicagoland.

I was going to give you some more bragging rights by pointing out that that was measured in deg F for all the guys that use deg C but that is really close to where the scales cross!

A balmy -17 F (-27 C) just North of Minneapolis. I have a heater in my insulated garage as well. Might do some snowmobiling when the temp gets up to 0 F.

MAN !!! now that sounds cold back there ...... I DO feel sorry for you ... 68-70 today ... not bragging ,,, its just nice today .... BUT summer here is a *****... 110-117 for over a month ,, in the shade ,, and no shade... gets too hot to do anything ... we love winter out here... must be why there are so many " snow birds " out here right now ... ( your neighbors that you don't see till spring thaw )

41 here today due to a Chinook wind that started last night. The 4 inches of snow has been melting and I now have slushy lakes out in the driveway. But the road trip to go to a friends old car parts sale today won't have ice an snow on the way up there as I would have had to yesterday.

You missed the hyphen, he means "minus" 26 degrees. BTW it's a "balmy" 6 degrees here too so 26 degrees does sound pretty sweet right now.

I'm sippin' on a mug of hot coffee with a "splash" of Kahluah in it watching old movies, givin' Desktop Dyno a workout and trying to finalize plans for an engine to get my new toy on the road. The cat keeps trying to curl up on my laptop cuz' it's nce and warm but the dumb dogs want to go outside!

The Kahluah is almost gone though, may have to break out the Bailey's.

On the plus side the welded parts cool off nicely outside. Also we don't get distracted hopping in the rod and going for a cruise. So it's not all bad.

My kid called from Minot last night.

Said he opened the hood on his tahoe and the entire engine compartment was filled with snow.

Said he's gotta get a plug-in battery heat blanket for his car today. New battery, too cold to start.

Yup...-40 with the windchill here last night, too. It's warmed up to a balmy -24C now.
No heat in the garage so I'm spending my day in the house.

Watch out where the Huskies go
and don't you eat that yellow snow!

it was 30 here last night, sitting in front of the heater. I warmed up a spray can of paint and my valve cover, took them outside, painted them, and cured the paint in the oven. :D

Does he have an engine block heater? Having the coolant in the block warm is the key to cold starts. If your charging system is working and you have a good battery there is really no need for a battery blanket.
    Hope that helps.

A warm battery WILL make more power than a cold battery.

Working part time at an auto parts store I found out that 5 years is about the average of the lifespan of a battery,no matter who made it,most of the bad ones we replaced were about 5 years old. They will last longer if you keep a trickle charger on it at night.

Went out to my favorite junkyard and pulled a hood off a '55 Buick, unbolted a couple WCFB's and removed a '56 Olds gauge cluster. Cold I can do.Cant handle the heat and humidity.Anything over 85F and I'm indoors.

It was 5 above this morning when I met Fuelpump and Lucky77 for breakfast. I see it's shot all the way up to 9 in the 7 hours since. I always try and think about spring this time of year and how much longer till it comes. Right now I'm looking a 2 months till March and the POSSIBILITY most of the snow will be over and the temps will start to rise. There is only about 3 months out of the year I don't like living here. If that time could be spent anywhere south of Tennesee I'd be a happy camper.
