i thought i saw a article in TRJ about a place that makes repos. if anyone has any infor on them please let me know. j
http://www.cart32.com/cgi-bin/cart32.exe/MCVEYSCADILLACLASALL-store?catid=4&prodid=36 Still less then a set of "get by" aftermarket wheels from the tire store. Just as the originals they have to be made to fit other then stock Cad rims that they came with.
what wheel are the repo caps designed to fit? What h***les can we expect fitting to 15x6 late ford steels. I am thinking the 57 caps
I've got originals on my '54 Ford. I welded them to trim rings that fit the Ford wheels. They need to be re-plated but I can't find anyone that will do them. I don't have a picture on file and it's 9 degrees outside so you'll have to use your imagination.
What's the deal with these caddy sombrero caps on chevy wheels? I hear you gotta weld a different inner cap or something like that? That means buying a fresh new cap and having to weld on it???
EXK just did a thread on adapting Cadi hubcaps to later rims. Check it out Technical 58/60 caddy caps & Sombrero's std wheel easy (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=430712)
I think most guys use a trim ring but yeah that is the general idea. These days I would be more inclined to use an automotive grade adhesive than weld them so you don't have to worry about warping etc that welding might cause.
I've got mine mounted on some junkyard Dodge steel rims. Fifteens. No modification on them at all. they are aftermarket stainless steel...
If interesed I have some Nos 52 Sombreros polished stainless steel that have never been plated. Will sell them for $150. ea Mcveys makes a good quailty repo stainless steel chrome plated 52 and 57 cap but there chrome is not so great. I mount the 52/53 sombreros to the smaller Od 15" trim ring with a good epoxy. The trim rings that show about 1/2" of the outside edge of the rim. They are kind of hard to find used and cheap so I usally buy these trim rings new from Jim at Night Prowller for about $25. a set 2. Sorry, no pics at this moment but will be doing some 52's and 53's next week and will snap a few pics for you
Doh!! Has anyone adated Sombrero's for 16" rims? Suppose it's the same deal as fixing them to a trim ring?
I have 53's on Chevy rims...Really easy to put on and NO I did not weld or bond the ring on them I wanted them to fit flush to the rim...Like I said really easy!!!!
Answering an old question, there were 16" Sombreros. I had a '49 he**** that was factory built with 16" wheels, and it had sombreros. I have no idea what other years or cars(limo?) would have had them. I was missing one and tried a 15". It fit securely onto the wheel, but the width or offset of the 15" wheels was apparently different than the 16" wheels. The edge of the 15' wheel cover stood away from the rim of the 16" wheel maybe 3/4". It looked better than nothing, but people were constantly warning me that my wheel cover was coming off.

Thanks for the info. The chart you posted lists the Series 75 limousine ch***is. Not included is Series 86, which at that time was called the "commercial" ch***is. Series 86 was used mostly for ambulances and he****s. As I already posted, my '49 Series 86 he**** had 16" wheels with sombreros.
I used the repops, and epoxied them to some trim rings. here is how I did it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=225872&showall=1
Anyone with a spare 16-inch Sombrero--send me a private message. Please! I'm down one. I have three Series 75 sombreros that are going on my shoebox, and the reason I need a fourth is because the guy who sold them to me thought he HAD four. That's how closely the 15-inch and 16-inch sombreros resemble each other. You have to measure to figure out that the Series 75/86 ones measure 17 inches in diameter. Thanks for the great information, and especially for the Series 86 information. I never knew that; I thought all the 16-inch caps were Series 75. The HAMB comes through again!
