Just as an FYI, I have created a group called Tesla. If you are interested in the man and his work (Nikola Tesla, not the rock band or the electric car), please sign up.

Well, it's for HAMB folks that are interested in Tesla. It looks like there are a few of us, at least.

I, too, don't think much of Edison. As a kid I idolized him; the more I learned about him the less I liked him.

I'm on board with that...living in central NJ I've been to Edison's workshops in Menlo Park and West Orange many times. Idolized him at first, but then started to realize he was more of an entrepreneur than an inventor....Tesla on the other hand was a genius.

Lots of info on Tesla at the Telluride CO museum. He worked with George Westinghouse to electrify the mines with alternating current at the turn of the last century. Ames power plant in the Illium Valley still produces power for the town

Geez do you laugh at cripple kids too? What a heartless *******! It was meant to be a PSA.

j/k, I laughed too. My neighbor claims they would do this as kids for kicks and the parents just watched.

Some people have a high tolerance for electrical shock...I have a friend who routinely pulls plug wires off running HEI ignition and gets nothing.....if I just look at the friggin' wire I get shocked. My scientific reasoning is that he has big fat fingers. I wonder what Tesla would say..........

I knew an old electrician who would lick two of his fingers and put them on a circuit to see if it was live or not...I kid you not!

    Hey, I'm in, Dudes.
I just read a great book about Tesla, Edison & Westinghouse, called "Empires of Light". Anyone else have recommendations on books about Tesla?

120V AC is not so bad really.
At least you can still move your muscles and disconnect, unlike DC voltage, especially at higher voltages.

It's a shame that true geniuses like Tesla or certain artists and thinkers often only get recognition long after their p***ing, if any notoriety at all.
It's always been that way and is still happening right now. There are a lot of unique minds, ahead of their time and alive a****st us, who are easily overlooked and sometimes considered crazy or out-of-touch and pushed aside in favor of those with far less inspiration and talent, but a greater need for attention with more skills in marketing and self-promotion.

Hey Frank, I can identify with your avatar. When I was about 6 I filled an octopuss plug with nails and screws and plugged it into a socket. Thing was thowing sparks like a Tesla coil till the fuse blew. Think I took a few years off moms life that day. She didn't know whether to hug me or beat me. She may have done both, I don't remember.

Yes, and a crook. And a heartless *******. Other than that, not so bad.

Tesla was truly brilliant and you can't help but wonder what he might have achieved if he was a better businessman (or had the right representation).

Hahaha...good one. I got one of those hug/beatings one time when my mom caught us playing on the railroad tracks.
Ok, worst electrical shock I ever got and it's even car related: I'm about 14 years old and my friends and I find the door cracked open on one of those big cast aluminum boxes that house the controls for the traffic lights. Being the genius that I am, I figure out by watching it, which relay pulls in to change the light. I wait for the light to change green, the cars start to roll and I change it right back to red. This goes on for several minutes and we're laughing our ***es off. I'm trying to peek around the door to watch the cars and work the relay at the same time and BANG-ZOOM- I get zapped. Next thing I remember I was picking myself off the ground- it felt like somebody kicked me in the chest and my hand and arm were numb. Gained a lot of respect for electricity that day.....ok who's gonna top me?

'Tesla' by Cheney is the seminal work.

'The Inventions, Researches and Writings of Nikola Tesla'

'Tesla - The Man Who Tamed Lightening' (not sure if I have that one right)

You can Google many of his original m****cripts and download them for free. Harvard, et al have been scanning and posting as everything that remains and is accessible is in the public domain.

    X2

Part of the issue with Tesla getting recognition is the fact that he was adopted by groups more on the fringe - UFOs and whatnot. As a result, many politicians and corporations shy away from supporting Tesla-related causes.

I remember reading that the Smithsonian itself had on display in DC incorrect information - attributing to Edison something Tesla had done - and the curator there refused to put things right. Don't know if that was ever resolved.

Not a shocker, but someone I knew had bought my old V12 XJ-S. It's over my house one day and we happened to have it running with the hood open. All we see are sparks coming out of the center of the valley. But the engine was running fine.

Turns out that the distributor cap had exploded (it happens on these cars). The sides of the cap - all 360 degrees of it - were gone. The top of the cap was held in place by the wires, so the car ran fine - open air distributor was all. He figured he had been running the car that way for a couple of weeks.
