Can anyone describe where to hook up the filter on a 49-53 flathead and which direction the oil should flow through the filter. i imagine the output from the motor is where the extra pipe plug is next to the oil pressure sending unit and the input to the motor could be on the drivers side of the block. there is a plug there also that would let the oil drain back into the motor but I am not sure which direction it should go through the filter.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

You are correct that the input to the filter is from the port next to the oil sender-these ports are common. The oil then goes to the pasenger side of the filter housing through a special 90* fitting that has a .040"-.060" restriction built into it, limiting the flow into the filter. The oil leaves the housing from the bottom and goes to that 1/8" pipe access in the block on the drives side. 1/4" brake tubing can be used if mounted on the left head as stock, but flexable hose has to be used if you remote mount the filter.

Like V8 Bob said, use rubber hose or a rubber link on a hardline if you remote the filter. Very, very important.

Thanks for all your help V8 Bob. I take it that the .04" - .06" hole is to prevent too much oil from going to the filter and not enough going thru the motor?

I was talking about this with a guy who builds cars.
His opinion was that on a flatty, ditch the oil filter.Maybe put a magnet on the bottom of your pan and change the oil often.
Oil filters pull 5LBs of pressure.

    ***anmike,
These filters are partial-flow in design, in that they filter a small amount of oil with a very fine filter, so eventually all the oil does gets filtered over time. There are pros and cons of this design and I'm not going to debate them, except that they are better than no filter. IMO.

The restriction in the line keeps the oil pressure in the engine up to standard.

Thanks everybody for all your help. Filter is mounter to the engine and plumbed in hard line.
