Change your auction settings to only allow bidders with a paypal account, and a US/Canada address. You might lose a few bidders because of this, but its well worth it. Legitimate bidders who don't have paypal, or are from out of the country can email and you can give them an exemption. Once I did this, I went from several scammers per auction, to zero.

In the UK you spell check CHEQUE.
He is not from the UK.

It is a scam and the problem is it makes everyone unnecessarily wary when a genuine overseas buyer wants to buy something.

I have the Nigerian *******s go ahead and send me the money order to add to my collection. At least it inconveniences them a little.

Most people purchasing large items on ebay have Pay Pal, so thats another clue to a scammer.

YES! THIS IS A SCAM! John

  8. put one of my projects up on ebay a couple of days ago, and in less then 24 hours its sold. The auction clearly stated that i required a $500 deposit through paypal and buyer to be responsibile for all shipping. I am pasting the buyers response that was sent after his commitment to buy. It seems a little fishy to me, but what the hell do i know? i usually sell parts. And this is my first vehicle. I would appreciate any honest opinions and thanks for the help.

As a seller you quite specific on the terms of what was required by the buyer to complete the deal. This is your auction, not the buyers. Unless he commits to your requirements than the "deal" is null & void. Usaually full payment is them required in around 7-10 business days. E-Mail him back and tell him if he does not full fill these requirements he will be reported to E-Bay and also that he should pay for your auction costs & the next auction costs.
Do not let him dictate the terms of your auction!

they booted me off the ebay discussion boards for telling people never sell a car on ebay. Craigs list is free.

I'm pretty sure you lose your listing fees whether the guy pays or not.

That's why I don't sell as a 'buy it now'. The scammers just like to push the ****on way too often.

Just say the item was damaged and don't do the transaction ,I know this will work on smaller items ,Don't know about a car .As long as no money exchanged hands ,No harm ,No foul .Dont ever give out any bank info ever ,And contact ebay right away .Youll get your listing fees back and a relist .He breached the contract ,Unless you received the deposit ,If you did refund his money and learn how to block buyers from other countries ,Thats in your buyers requirements...

Like the many replies on here already this is most definately a scam. The pigeon english and the wording gives it away instantly. Pretty unfortunate both for you guys selling your stuff and for us legitimate buyers from over the seas.
I have just recently bought a car (37 Dodge coupe) from NJ via ebay. I phoned the guy explaining that I was very interested in the car, that I was bidding from the UK and that I could handle all the shipping from my end, the only requirements the guy needed was to be there to allow collection of the car.
This was the first car that I have bought from abroad and I was a complete novice but it was real easy and totally h***le free.
I can fully understand some of you guys not wanting to sell abroad because off the h***le that these scammers cause.
Its a shame that ebay doesn't come down harder on them , or try to deal with the issue better.

Hope you don't lose out financially here.
    Paul.

From some of the posts before it is his "english" that gives him/it away
I'm in New Zealand and value the trust we need to have in each other with international deals and value that above anything else
I bought a dodge from a guy in Idaho before Xmas and rang him three times, he sent me photos and posted two videos on You tube for me and the deal went through as sweet as possible. I now have a friend in Idaho - not a grumpy guy who is pissed off with an international buyer - Thats important to me.
If I purchase another vehicle I can show a track record in dealing fairly with you guys!

    Cheers Brett

You get dinged for the fees immediately, but after a week or ten days you can file a non-payment dispute, and they have to provide proof that they paid, in this case since it was Paypal required, you will get credited. I have gone through this, though not for a car.
I hate Ebay, and if there was a decent alternative for my volume of stuff, I'd be gone in a heartbeat.

  22. Okay, relax...

This happened to me the other day on an engine. I didn't have to lift a finger - these ***holes will do this to a bunch of people at once - the account was suspended from eBay in less than 24 hours, I got my money refunded (the final value fee, in this case it should be your $125 "transaction services fee") as soon as I went through the link to "report a problem with a transaction" but I'm not sure I even needed to go that far, when I went through it came up an error like I had already done that.

If this doesn't happen, though, there should be an option when reporting a problem to eBay that the guy "tried to pay with fake or fraudulent funds" which will also end up with you getting the money back no problems. eBay's made a lot of changes to these processes in the last year or so to streamline them for sellers.

You'll have to relist the vehicle, of course, this time be sure you state no cashier's checks. And since it's your first vehicle it should have been free to post, and will be free to re-post, the first four they give you free, after that it's $20.

While some of these ideas are great, it's not likely this guy is in the UK and sending anything to him is a waste of money, someone told these Nigeria guys to lie about where they live when they register. Now if you could somehow send them a nuke that would go off when they opened it, that wouldn't be so bad, but maybe you should tell him to follow the lead of that guy who flew to Detroit back at Christmas, to build a bomb, sit on it, and set it off.

I recieved the exact same message, word for word, when I tried to sell my neighbors 78 caddy. I reported it to e-bay right away and they gave me a credit for the selling fee. You have to report it asap. My advise to everyone in never use a Buy it Now format. If someone is intrested, they will want to call and talk to you over the phone.

I also like the idea someone posted above about only selling to US/Canada and have a Paypal account. Any international bidders will e-mail you if they are intrested.

  26. Yes, +2 on NO BUY IT NOW ON VEHICLES. It's rare these guys will actually try to bid to win something, unless they happen on a target right at the end of the auction.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine. The guy from England bought a his car at the buy it now price shortly after he listed it. Buyre sent a cashiers check for $3500 over the purchase price  and told him to cash the check and send the $3500 to his shipper in England. The check looked real the bank the check was issued from was real bank in US. He took the check to his local bank and they told him it was a fake. Next day the buyer's e-bay account no longer exists :( My buddy is going to frame the check and hang it on his wall.

IT'S a SCAM. Give him a mailing address in Nigeria. Something like: Mr. Marshall Lowdy, 26 E. Lanewick, Lagos, Nigeria M47.
