Hi, two years ago I rebuild the shock absorbers of my 56 Lincoln. How I have to admit that the rear leaf springs are to weak. I want to brink them to a blacksmith to bring them back in shape. I´m also thinking about to lower the car about 2". Could anyone say where I get new and lowered shocks and coils springs? Thanks and greetings from germany LG
if you are only dropping it 2 inches you could cut the front springs . probably less than one coil...for the rear you could make 2" lowering blocks...take your springs to a commercial truck spring business...they can work wonders ...
Would a Lincoln use the same front springs as a Ford or Merc? If so the link below is for you. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=260795
Here's a link to some old pics of my project -a '46 Lincoln body on a '56 Lincoln Premier ch***is. I used 1/4" thick steel channel to make lowering blocks -scan down the pics and you will see them...... http://www.canadianrodder.com/uc/brown/art1/brown1.htm
I lowered mine in the rear with 2 inch blocks & took out the two smallest leafs. I also added the "air over leaf" setup from Air Ride so I can adjust the reat about 3", trust me...you need it, the rear will drag on any steep drive way. I cut 1.5 coils off the front coils. This made my 56 sit pretty level with the rear a smig lower than the front. You can look at my pics if you want, it think it sits right, but lower would look even better. Post some pics. There's not many 56 Lincs out there.
Almost forgot, lowering the rear can make it a real chore to get the rear tires off, the flat lip where the skirts sit does not give you much room. A slighty smaller and narrow tire will help me when I need to replace my WWW's. Good Luck!
I have a 57 in the shop right now that lays on the frame, and chopped 4 inches. you could use it for a coffee table
Thank you for all the answers. Hmm, but if the front/rear springs are lowered, aren´t the shock absorbers compressed too much?
Jamco said, that I could use the present shocks. Hm I´m not shure that it works. Here are two pics of a ´56. The red one is my Lincoln.
I think you can use the same shocks , but if it was mine , I would use lowering block in the rear and cut the springs in the front ! BUT first consider where you drive the most and where you part your Lincoln . Check the dip if you park in a driveway ! Also the road rash can kill you ! Have fun and post some pics of your Lincoln !
Hi, after rebuilding my power steering pump, two new hoses and a chromed fluid reservoir I get back to my idea to lower LP. On the right&left side of the car, runs a angle(?) (on the picture where green meets white) from the front to the tail. I think when the car was new, that line was straight. Now the rear is lower (from the ground to that line are 69,5cm/27") than the front (71cm/28") AND the rear driver side is lower than the right (68cm/26,7"). So where to start? Front or rear? Jamco Suspension is able to manufacture new coil springs which are lowered 2" and I found a company to rebuild the leaf springs. I want the car equally low or the front a little bit lower than the rear. So if anyone has an idea, let me know. Lennart
Time to post again... the company that tried to rebuild my rear leaf springs make something very special: After ***embled them I realized that the car was higher than before. Lucky me. So I ordered new lowered springs from Jamco Suspension. That was in february. After waiting now for more than three month they still not arrived. My questions, why it took so long, are not answered from Mr Genty. So maybe next year (or never) I could show you my Lincoln. Lowered.
