So,im on a trip to colorado, and as im driving i spot a few cars out the corner of my eye so i pulled over to see.

turns out its a dried out river bed with at least 15 or so cars sunk with rocks filling the entire cars.

some smashed and barried in the dirt

from truck cabs to full size caddys :(

    its pretty SAD :(

Every one of those cars has a story behind it. We'll never know them though. Bummer.

It's a very common thing to find out here on the plains. There's a few spots in western KS where it seems old cars are growing out of the ground in rows......Unfortunatley, they were used to control erosion.

My guess is that the cars were used as 'cages' to contain the rocks, to form dams, or berms, or whatever the folks intended to do.

Most likely erosion control, pretty standard back in the day.

looks like the rancher used a can opener to cut the roofs open so he could dump the rocks in

That might be a sorry sight in your eyes but it looks like a gold mine for small parts and stainless trim to me. Old cars were used for erosion control, I knew a fellow who specialized in 55/58 Chev's that pulled a lot of hard to find small parts out of a place like that.

Like Abomb stated, very common around here. I enjoy driving and seeing them all over.

I remember when I was a kid, there was a creek by the house that we would play in. It had some cars use like that to stop erosion around the bends. Have no idea what they were. Would kinda like to go back and see now that you brought this up. Cool pics.
