I am looking for the color that is shot on the inside of most aircraft parts. Its like a drab mixed with mustard in a flat? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

Are you talking about the green color? If so it should be Zinc Chromate Green or something along those lines. There is also a generic yellow color too, but I am not familiar with what it's called.

You can mix flat yellow into O.D. Green for the same look.

What he said Zink Chromate. It's an anti corrosion finish.

zinc chromate is not used anymore. we just use a yellow colored epoxy primer. if the application calls for it, we use a water borne yellow tinted primer. the zinc chromate has carcinogens...none of thses paints we use are user friendy in the government though.

If you are just trying to replicate the effect, you could try "metal etching primer" in a rattle can. it's availiable damn near everywhere, bites well, hard as nails, and the std color is a drab green. If you are trying to match the aircraft color exactly, this won't work.

edit: After looking at the above link, the zinc chromate yellow is waaay more yellow than I thought, but the metal etch primer looks pretty close to the zinc cromate green.

Yeah zinc chromate primer was a killer itself, just ask any of the thousands of 80 plus year old aircraft guys that have used it since they were teenagers.
    Gimme a break.
Smoking kills too. I saw an interview with a 104 year old woman and they asked her if she did anything different in her advanced age, she said, yeah, I quit smoking three years ago. Someone probably siad, "see, those cigarettes finally got her!"
Ever think some folks are just more prone to cancer than others?

Have had extensive yellow zinc chromate plating done (think grade 8 hardware) over the last 2 years including my entire frame, torque tube, rear axle housings, backing plates, pedals, panhard rod, shocks, and steering arms.

It's wonderful for old parts as the acid bath will eat most rust. Wonderful primer to be painted over or left alone.

On my new 4130 frame and the (mild steel?) torque tube the yellow color has turned more to a white or silver color (think white zinc chromate plating on most other hardware) yet a few other small 4130 pieces and the other parts have not.

The yellow plating is about 9 times more corrosion resistant than the white I'm told.

    Relatively inexpensive.

Breathing the sanding dust will put heavy chromate and zinc solids in your lungs that could lead to cancer or nerve destruction. I just wear a respirator when spraying or sanding this stuff. As Iceberg460 mentioned, you can buy it from Aircraft Spruce. The company they buy from is the last one putting it in an aerosol can. Tempo only sells the zinc phosphate primer now but it is available in yellow & green.

There used to be 2 leaded EP1 greases available until the end of last year. Now there is only one due to poor sales of these products and lawsuits for cancer, they just can't justify making them anymore. You can ask any old Navy man about painting ships with red or white lead. That was the best for salt air corrosion. They are just now formulating epoxy primers that are near as good but they are expensive.

Good old zinc chromate can't be beaten for quick spot priming and weld through capability. This country is going to protect itself to death if this **** keeps up.

Like posted already the yellow is zinc chromate primer and the green is the same ZC paint with carbon black added and then called "Olive Drab".

Can make it using ZC primer and flat black. Won't take much black so go slow adding and mix/test the color

Rust preventing and camo-flaggy in one.:D

If you're only looking to paint a relatively small area, like an interior, I found it easy enough to just go down to the local Hobby Shop, and buy a few large jars of the Testor's Zinc Chromate Green in enamel, along with a can of their reducer so I could thin it down to run through my touch up gun, and I was good to go. for added protection, I shot PPG matte clear over it. I painted my chopped Cruiser bike frame this way, and have taken it to Bonneville 4 years, and it holds up great. Plus if I ever need to do a repair job, I know where to get more, no problem.
