I was thinking ,I wonder if a 20x22 garage was considered to be small for a car build. I built mine in that.Had to move some stuff aruond, but it worked for me.

Have you built in smaller shops?

Build ch***is and body, (no engine and gearbox) in a cellar a little lesser than 16x16.
Had to take it apart again to get it up on the street.
Cellar was something like 10´lower than the pavement, and the only way in and out, was a normal seized door opening and a staircase.
Really learned to keep things neat and tidy :)

  4. Years ago a local guy built a neat 30's Mopar coupe in an old one car garage. The interior walls were completely covered with tin foil, shiny side out, and the place was lit with only a few simple bulbs. Worked for him.

20 x 22 is pretty big I think. I would take a look at Keven Lee's garage to compare....

I had a friend who built his car in a one car garage .Plus painted his car.Later he did mine .There is only 2 ft of space on the sides ,He did a great job,I don't know how ,But he's good.Only charged me 90.00 to paint the car .That was over 20 years ago ,Now Im cheap and do it myself ,Plus he moved .He also painted my boat in my garage ,

Here's what I am using. One car garage and a driveway that is on an incline so I can't push it outside or I will never get it back in without a couple peoples help.

  8. A pal of mine built a nice A coupe bout 40 years ago in a model A sized 1 car garage - probably 8'X14'. If 2 guys visited him you had to move around the car in one direction, there wasn't room to p*** each other.

20X22 is huge. As I teen I built out of a 1.25 car and was livin large! It seemed especially spacious when the whole operation had to downsize into an 8x8 shed :)

  12. I built my first car, a 67 Mustang fastback, with my dad's help on top of a piano bench. We got testors glue and paint on the hardwood floor and my mom freaked.

Built my roadster in a 12X12 shed in my back yard. Had to take out a patio cover post to get it by and out of the back yard.

My dad built his cars in a dirt alley behind his parents house in Santa Monica... back when alleys were about as wide as 1 car.

built my first car in a small dirt floor lean-to shed
I could only work on one end at a time,
had to roll it outside turn it around and roll it back in to work on the other end.

I got a buddy, Ozark here on the hamb who has a 1 car garage and a 65 biscayne. He's swapped motors, trans, rear ends, done body work, all in this little garage, not much bigger then the damn car! I keep telling him to quite doing stuff to his house and build a bigger garage! Who needs a yard! :)

I've built stock cars in my old 14' x 20' garage and it was tight. I kept bulky items outside like fenders, hood, steel stock, etc to give me more room.

Carried my '32 Ford frame down the stairs to my ba*****t in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. so I could finish it during the freezing winter. Took 4 guys to get it back out when it was done.
Cold makes people do crazy ****. Glad I live in So Cal now.

  22. A bit OT, but I read of a disabled guy that build a small cruising sailboat in a small garage. He only had enough room for the boat hull and his wheel chair, so he built it on a large table with casters on it. When he worked on one side, he'd push the whole thing over to the wall, then reverse the process to work on the other side. Lot's of rodders would kill for a 20x22 shop - go for it.

I work in a one car garage that was built in 1948. It is someting like 9 X 18 ; with 2 motorcycles, washer and dryer, work bench, air compressor and a 413 BB mopar on the floor around the car. I hope to build an addition on soon. I took the car to the derust dipper yestarday, man I felt like my garage was huge with only the 2 Harleys in there.

lets see, i'm working on a small off topic 80's car and my garage is so small i can't open the p***enger side door. it's about a hundred years old. the person who designed it was smart though and built a lot of cabinets in there as well as a large bench on one side. and I do have a loft, sacrificed a lot of ceiling height, but gives me storage space.

in college I rebuilt a T/A in a 10 x 20 storage unit (no place to work at the apartment) Teh only power was from an adapter screwed into the light socket. 25 years later I'm about to do the same thing. gotta get a house with a garage!
