Whats the smallest space you built a car in?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by yankbuilt, Jan 6, 2010.

  1. Single-car garage built in the late '50s - itty-bitty thing that barely held my project at that time, which was a '71 Dart 340 4-speed. It held the car, and I had maybe a foot around the car to manuever. Fine If I was under the hood or the car, but brakes and interior issues meant rolling the car onto the slab outside!

A mini-storage stall was probably the next worst. Tiny and only one electrical outlet, plus one 100W light bulb hanging from the ceiling!

A 10x20 garage attached to the house I took my 36 Willys PU apart to box the chassis and install new motor mounts and front axle. Had the pick up box in the den and the bed sitting behind the chassis tools and engines against the walls

got a friend that built 3 model A's (one at a time)
in a very small One car garage.
maybe there was a reason he chose to build model A's instead of Caddy's

I built a '68 Buick Skylark Convertible (not HAMB friendly) in a 1 car detached garage built in 1917. It wasn't easy but I was young and had a lot more energy (and was skinny enough to squeeze in tight spots a little better) back then ;-)

depending on the length of that trailer..you almost have the same square feet as a 2 car garage
but its got to be a PITA being only 8 feet wide, not to mention after drinking too much and falling 3 feet to the ground when you walk out

  8. I wish I had a garage I could get a lot more work done, unforentally I just take up space at my dads shop and get bitched at all the time for it being there..hopefully one day have my own shop to work out of

Built 3 cars in my little mancave. The TT was a challenge as I had to keep moving it side to side. Got it done in under a year. ezombie walked in there and freaked at how much I have stuffed in there. its like its procreating.

I chopped my Chevy in a 10x20 rented space, it was a nightmare.

My garage is 10 x 18 with a kickout in the back that my grandfather added on when he bought his 69 Chev C-10 long bed and needed the extra length. No heat and no insulation. I've been thinking seriously about buying a 40 ft shipping container to use as a shop and put it next to the garage. Or extend a workshop area on the back of the garage to move my work bench and engines to.

When I was in High School, my buddy and I did all the body work on my GTO in a chicken coop. Maybe about 18 x8 with a bump out for a wood stove. This was mid-winter 1982 and it took about 2 hours of cranking the stove to get the place warm enough to work.

Ok, I've got you all beat. When I started out (1976) I restored a 30 Model A Coupe in the spare Bedroom in our 2 Bedroom apartment. One piece at a time. The neighbours had a hard time trying to figure out what the hammering was!!

Small one car garage. With car inside and doors shut against back bumper I could rest my butt against front fender whilst working on the bench in front. Centered, side doors of the car would touch the walls on both sides. I did a lot of work outside, of course.........

I'm in a 12x16' workshop with swinging doors barely wide enough to pull in and out.

I gave up a great space for cheaper rent. At least it's got 220.

Something like a 10x18 single car apartment garage with one outlet. Just wait until I start painting in there, the neighbors are going to love me even more...

My garage is only 12x20, but it sure beats the hell out of my last place which only had a gravel parking pad with no shelter. I built my '48 Chevy that way, never again! The only downside to my little garage is there's no insulation or heat in it. Needless to say, nothing much gets done in there during the winter.

    Current garage...

48 Willys station wagon in an open parking space in the apartment complex I lived at in Texarkana Texas.

Technically, two spots as I had the 1960 Chevy donor car parked next to it. Parts, bolts and slabs of sheet metal (for rust patches) came off of the Chevy and onto the Willys. The neighbors loved it LOL.

Wasn't Kevin Lee's roadster largely built in the basement of his house? I seem to remember him thinking that garage pictured on the 1st page was a step up.

When I started my business I was in a 20X15 garage which I worked in for almost 10 years until I did my current shop. I built lots of chassis and several turn key customer cars during the time in that shop. It made me appreciate what I have now.

in the 70's my cousins and uncle built a T bucket in their basement in Ohio, then they just took it apart and carried it out piece by piece, real 70's cool basement, orange shag carpet, guns on the walls, gym. I spent a lot of hours hanging out down there.
