SO I called my local paint guy tell him I need some touch up paint for my car give him the code, he asks what it is for I tell him touch up paint, he says this will not work! Its water based and you can't use a water based paint as a touch up paint on a solvent based paint! Is this the case????? is there a anyway to make this work! I am just touching up some stone chips! Thanks John
John was it Finishmasters? The shop in Bellflower has been very helpful to me. I don't know the answer to your query, but you might give 'em a call. They're on Rosecrans.
Whatever the paint on your car is, is what you want for touchup. Even if you should get a perfect match of the color, after touching up a stone chip it will still show. If that's your goal, just to kind of hide the stone chips then go to a paint store, get a handful of paint color chip samples and match up the color the best you can, then have them mix a pint of paint. Dab it on real thin with a artist's brush not so much that it will run or drip beond the edge of the stone chip. Let it tack-cure and give it a second dab. Remembering all along that the touch up will still show.
I know all that! that paint on this car is over 10 years old, I am out of touch paint thats all....I don't need to match nothing up I have the paint code! I have touched it up alot over the years! MY question was about water based paint not how to touch it up!
John, What would happen if you just used acrylic enamel for a touch up fix? If it would work and you cant get the paint, just let me know and I will give it a try with my paint guy up here in the Great White North. Larry
If you have the code you should be able to get the paint done out of state where they still have solvent based paint. I am no expert but I would be very surprised if you could use waterbourne to touch up solvent based paints.
DUPLICOLOR-Kragens, Autozone, etc....If it's just for touching up No, you can't use a waterborne paint for touch up cuz i believe it needs to be clear coated, otherwise, it would wash off ...good luck! EW
John I'll be speakin with a auto paint rep. tomorrow and with find out for sure. Contrary to some beliefs once water-bourne paint has dried it wont wash off with water! even before its clearcoated.
Exactly. Even if the waterborne is heat cured as soon as the car is washed, it's coming off. You would have to touch up with color, then follow with clear to protect it if waterborne is used.
water bourne paint can absolutely be used over any solvent based paint, we do it every day at work. once it has completly cured it will not wash off with water. this stuff is hard to wash off your hands with soap and water. go ahead and use it without worry
PPG Envirobase and Aquabase can be used over solvent based products with no problems once it is dry. For the best durability, one could dab clear over the touch up in the chip.
Waterbourne paint can be applied over solvent paint, I use it everyday and if it didn't go over solvent based paint then all the bodyshops in the country would be shit out of luck when it comes time to do paint work on a customers car. The dried basecoat won't wash off if it is not cleared over but I wouldn't be surprised if it smudged a little, they make a hardener for the base so that it can be applied as an underhood color.
The issue is not whether it can be applied over solvent (which obviously in the collision industry it can) but if it can be used as a touch up paint on a solvent based paint job.
You could take a little trip down to Oceanside if you are nervous about using waterborne paint - they were still selling solvent based paint in November 2009. I picked up both Dupont and PPG. Also you can still purchase a BASF solvent based paint in Orange County which is legal and VOC compliant. I get mine at The paint Store in Laguna Niguel.
Jon, I talked with a friend that shoots water based every day. He says technically yes yo ucan, but it isn't lasting for long. There is a website www.paintscratch.com that you can order touch up kits from. if you have a color code, they might be able to set you up with a solvent-based kit. Hope this helps you out brother.
You dont even have to go out of state! Just get the paint from an area that doesnt do strictly water based paints. For instance Im in OC and I get my paint in Oceanside. I think water based paint are only for OC, LA, and Riverside counties so far. If its small chips have em mix you some single stage in a pint and apply it with a pencil, build it up, wet sand it down, and buff her out
